I can pick out and use power tools with the best of 'em, but when it comes to a stove, I'm clueless. But I try.
I have this huge chunk of meat currently thawing on my counter and I don't have a clue how to cook it...heck I don't really even know what it is. I need a simple recipe. well, the actual recipe doesn't hafta be simple, I can follow directions, but the ingredients hafta be simple. The only spices I have are the ones you put in a pumkin pie (I can make that:D ) and the ones that come on those premade spice racks that you give as gifts. Anyway the meat...
On the label it says "Fresh Pork Picnics whole" and it weighs 7.59 pounds.
I also have a slow cooker if there are any recipes for that.
So go ahead, post away!!
:help: :needhelp: :santa:

I am looking up something in my "fix it and forget it" slow cooker book. But with that size, you will have to cook in the oven. I wonder what kind of cut that is?
:)
I have some really good slow cooker reciepes if your interested sometime. It won't help you today though.

thats weird, what did I do with my beef reciepe? I am dangerous on computers. Will put it back up.....
This is for beef Tiz, but thought I would share because its SO easy and good.
3-4 lb roast
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 envelope dry onion soup
1 - 16oz bottle pepsi or coke
Place the meat in the slow cooker, and throw everything on top.
Slam on the lid and cook on high for about 6 hours. We serve with noodle because there is a really good gravy after cooking.

That looks pretty good lovethesea, and easy. Does it taste any different if you use Coke than if you use Pepsi? I would probably only use coke if I made it though since thats all I drink and I hate Pepsi.

Cool, I'll try that. Everytime I cooked a roast in the slow cooker before it always came out dry, go figure:rolleyes:
But I will try that recipe. Lemme show you that cut of meat, maybe you can tell more than I can. My dad bought it because it was on sale, he gave it to me because it was so big... Gimme 5...

is it a pork shoulder?
I work at a BBQ restaurant and we have pork shoulder that says pork picnic on it.... if it is it will have bone in.
what i would reccomend doing is getting some mesquite chips and water the stting the meat in the water with the chips and roasting in the over.... unless you have 14 hours to slow smoke it. :D

OK, now this might be a really dumb question but I am gonna ask anyway because I just noticed this. This meat was frozen solid the day it was bought until I started thawing it last night (in the fridge), does this matter?...

hmmm i guess you could do it slow on 350 for moistness and flavor...
at work we smoke them at 225 for a long long time.....
what we do after it is cooked....
Take it out and pull it off of the bone (if you smoke it)
or just slice it off.... should be pretty tender.
leave that skin on

yummy....pulled pork. I LOVE that. You can keep meat frozen for a few months. I use one of those food savers for any meat I buy. I love that. You can keep meat lots longer.
Aaron, do you smell to high heaven when you get home? A neighbor kid of ours works at KC Masterpiece and he can't wait to get home to shower and ditch the clothes.

I don't think it matters. It is what makes the meat so darned tender.
Man, I am getting hungry!!

how ever you do it, if you bring it up to 195 internal temperature you can make pulled pork. throw some cumin and powdered onion with some heat and call it carnitas. i think more like 300 in the oven would be better, low and slow is how you cook these fatty cuts. it will render the fat out and youll be left with some delicious pork. the crock pot is a good bet as well, i personally smoke mine on my kettle weber for about 6-7 hours at around 300 degrees. then double wrap in foil and throw it in a small cooler for another hour. dont get confused by the cooler, fill it with hot water to get it warm, pour it out just after foiling your pork roast and put er in, close the lid and dont touch for an hour.

Tizzo, I am sorry but I just had to chuckle while reading this thread. So how was dinner? and was it Taco Bell or KFC? Sorry I did not read this sooner, but with a big 'ole hunk of meat like that it would probably take literally all day to thaw. Even if it was in the fridge overnight, thawing something in the fridge is like trying to teach a pig to sing. Also in the future when you are thawing out a big hunk of meat like this fill the sink with hot water and it will that out much quicker than just placing it on the counter.
Also for the future here is a hint. Since they sometimes do not allow weblink I will talk in code Charlie Oscar Oscar Kangaroo dot com. Just make sure your ad blocker is one and you will hundreds of recipes, kind of average which ones souind good and go from there.

Here is your dinner for tomorrow. It is good. :joy:
1 cut up chicken. A full chicken that has been cut up or enough chicken with the bones in it that is about the same weight
2 cups Instant rice
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 packet of dry onion soup mix (usually come 2 packets to the box, only use 1 packet.)
1/2 cup of milk.
Mix everything except the chicken together. Put this slop in a 9 x 13 baking pan. Put the chicken on top of the slop. Cover with foil and bake at 325 degrees for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Eat and enjoy, be careful because all of the chicken will fall off the bone.
Takes about 15 minutes to prepare and is good and easy to cook, plus the house will smell good.
