if you cut a zoa / paly at the base, will the base regrow, and / or will the head that you cut off reattach to something and live?

It can yes. Ever wonder how yours zoanthids started growing on the back of a rock clear on the other side of you tank? WIll it if you cut it yourself? Probably not. I think it depends on the zoanthid. Fast growers can and do often times get cut, covered with algae and pinch off, fall away, reattatch and grow back out, but I wouldn't try it with something like AOG or some of the other touchy kinds.
Most of the time though if you cut it at the base that individual polyp will wilt, the base will heal and regrow. Think about it. A colony is joined by the mat and when fragged what does it do? Continue gowing.
If you are trying to get more growth out of an individual polyp give it some time. More growth from a colony, frag it, most grow faster afterwards.

Here is one that is pinching off naturally. It will drop and the bud underneath will open as a full zoa. The head that drops off will settle somewhere and start a new colony.
Seems almost that when a colony is disturbed a lot this form of propagation is carried out, but I may be wrong in that assumption. It could be for other reasons and maybe no reason at all.

I have some of those same zoa's and they are doing the same thing!
Suurrre they are. I know, want to be just like me, huh? Kidding. Cool. Watch them and make sure they have good flow over them. Course it is almost impossible to tell where the polyps will land and even if they will attatch and start a new colony, but might have a new one spring up soon.
Also make sure there is nothing irritating them to cause this. I sometimes wonder if it is a stress thing like anemones do by splitting when water conditions or irritants stress them out. I haven't found anything though as all my zoas are doing awesome and these look great too, just a thought is all.
Probably just a way for them to spread.

One of the palys i got from you a while back did that too flric. mabye you have a bad tank
hahaha, just kidding, I think your ric. tank is incredible!! 3 polyps pinched off, floated around for a day, and re-attached on the back of the rocks. I thought they fell into a hole and died, until i was searching through the tank and found them, pretty neat that they attached with no problem with the amount of flow in my tank.
