my fire station had a call for a lift assist.usually its someone obese that has fallen and there aint eneough family to pick them up.so they call us to help.well this afternoon we got a call .just me and the chief showed .everyone else was working.we get there and a lady said her husband suffers from alzheimer's disease .earlier in the day her husband had a seizure and an ambulance had to take him to the hospital where they ran some tests and gave him some sedatives.they released him.apparently got him to their p/u truck.when she got home he was still out of it and she couldnt get him out of the truck.she figured she would leave him in the truck untill the medicine wore off.well 4 hrs later and he was still out of it.she couldnt move him herself .well we opened the truck door to help.huh this guy had on a flannel thin coat and slippers on.nothing else.he really didnt know what was going on.so we started to move his legs aside to help him out and there it was his junk all out in the open.wtf its 45 degrees out.
of course it really didnt bother us we just wanted to get this poor soul in his home.we finally got him to his recliner in the house ,he looked at us and asked what are you doing here.it really was an eye opener of how we should enjoy everyday especially at christmass and appreciate everything we have.
by the way how did he get from the hospital to the truck with just a flannel coat on?hospitals stealing clothes these days?

That is tough enjoy life stay healthy - we work so hard when we are younger and healthy - then we get older and things start to get tougher. I do have a lot of respect for you guys that volunteer, you must see some really bad things.

i have seen some bad car wrecks and some bones, blood .dont really bother me i stay focused on the job at hand.
funny thursday night we had training at the next town over firehall.we took our engine in case we had a call.it was just me and old man bob.on the way back to our station.we drove up on a 3 car accident .i put the lights on and walked over.there was a guy on the phone with 911.i asked if anyone was hurt.he looked at me and said wow you guys are fast around here.
a 3 yr old and 5 yr old girls were in the back seat the 3 yr old was having neck problems and the 5 was bleeding pretty good from above and below her eye.nothing too serious.we put the neck braces on them and got them in the ambulance and off to cook childrens hospital.it does suck helping little kids when they are hurt.luckily these two little ones we not screaming they we very calm and that helped.
holidays coming up and there will be plenty of house fires and accidents.
i love every minute of it.

Unfortunately, my family has a history of alzheimer's and dementia. My mother is 84 now, and she can hardly remember what she did a couple hours earlier. However, her long-term memory seems to be intact (she knows all the kids, grandkids, where she used to live, etc.). I've already told my kids that if I do get lucky enough to live to my 'older days', that I don't want to get stuck in some nursing home with a feeding tube in my mouth, sitting in a bed staring off into space. Some may disagree, but I think Dr. Kevorkian got it right. Give me a bottle of Propofol with a button to push, and I can go off to 'permanent dream land' on my own terms.

Yeah it's been sad to see my granddad's memory go. He asks me the same questions all the time. I'm not sure if he really knows who I am anymore and he was once the smartest guy I ever knew. He is 84.
