Well it has been over two years and I finally found the time to build a sump. Space was limited under my 72 so I used a 20 gallon that just BARELY fit I picked up a really nice skimmer the other day rated for 250 gallons, but for a hundred bucks I could'nt pass it up, I will use it in the future for a bigger system, anyways since space was limited I just built a little are for the return pump to go to cut down on micro bubbles being reintroduced to the display tank. Let me know what you think.
I know I need a smaller sock.

Just a quick update I got the sump all put in and it works good. Those overflows work so nice and they are very very quiet.

Hey I just did the exact same thing, got the sump installed yesterday evening. Worked until 1:30am and then turned it all off. I wouldn't of been able to sleep with the overflows and pump running with only having a few minutes to watch how it was working.
So today I had more time to watch the intake and return. Your right, those HOB overflows work very well. I was leary on how noisy they would be but for the most part they aren't any louder than what I was running previous, which was a Fluval canister filter.
Does your making a sucking sound periodically? I have my intake turned on its side instead of pointing up. I am going to play around with it as I didn't have to cement the parts under water so I can remove the intake portion and face it up if I want. Just curious.

Dont think it matters where the intake is pointing. Mine does make a sucking or gurgling sound on occasion maybe four or five times a night lasting for about ten seconds or so.

Yeah, that is all I am getting as well. I just think of it as, oh there goes some more crud off the top.
Thanks for the reply, now I don't have to get my hands wet for this. On too the next thing.

Just a question, not a suggestion.
Why did you not Bulkhead off the area from the skimmer to the area where the skimmer puts out clean water?

Space was limited and I was concerned about water being stagnent in no flow areas of the sump, I was concerned about bubbles but they went away in a few hours. So to answer your question baffles were not nedded.

So, can you post pics of your sump working? Or, post a link to where we can find your sump already working? I'm curious how your DIY overflow is working for you.
