I flooded the garage again and my wife is ticked off. I have a RO/DI that drips into a 5 gallon bucket. I have to watch it to shut off the water. I often forget for a long time. Tonight I left the house and now the carpet is soaked again. What kind of float valve will shut off the water? With out drilling the bucket?

Forgive me I did not get much sleep last night. Garage...soaked carpet
is the carpet in your garage?...or did it leak from the garage into the house...if the former, why do you have carpet in your garage and why would she care if it was wet? Just curious.

We have Asian throw rugs in the garage. We do not part the car in there. Just use it for storage...And making ro/di water.

If you just want a temporary solution, move the RO/DI into the laundry room. It has all the stuff you need, cold water spiget, and a drain for the washing machine. But for simple/small 5 gal fill-ups, just put the bucket/container on top of the washing machine. When the 5gal overflows, it will slowly spill onto the washing machine lid, which drains into the washing tub and fills it up. Most tubs are about 20-30 gals, so it buys you a couple hours of 'forget time'
.
If you have a newer front loading washer, nevermine, just works for the top loaders.

Of course the ultimate solution is to run a water pipe and drain into the room where your tank is (look Ma! no carrying water!!!!) and then put a shutoff valve in the holding tank.
I'm not sure why T316 doesn't trust shutoffs, I did this a couple of years ago and have never had any problems since then.
I suppose if you're really nervous you could install two shutoffs in series in the same line to the tank, one an inch higher up than the other.
Oh! You're going to outgrow the bucket pretty quickly. Think in terms of some holding tank on wheels (like a trashcan on wheels). I use a 40 gallon bakery ingredients bin with the shutoff installed in the side.

i make my ro in the gararge also ,i put the 5 gallon containers just inside the door .if it over flows it just goes out the door onto the driveway.
not to steal your post but ,about a month ago i was doing something in my 150 gallon dt.
it is predrilled and i wanted to turn the return pipe (i took out the overflows and just put pvc to the top)well i turned the pipe a little ,i heard a pop and all of a sudden water started coming out the bottom of the tank onto my diningroom floor.
i tried to turn it back and the water really started to pour out.
i broke the rubber seal. i could get it to stop i needed help someone to hold the pipe inside and the other underneath.
wife was at work so i started to call neighbors .one didnt answer and the another was at mcdonalds.i told him what was going on .he actually got here in 5 minutes.he said he was doing 80mph down the thruway to get here to help.by the time he got here probably 40 gallons already came out .i figured i wouldnt be able to stop it .so i started emptying water from the dt to a 45 gallon tank i have to put the fish in.man i was running my ass back and forth.
well we got the tube tight and stopped the leak.by then i had over half the tank water on the floor.luckily the tank backs up to the gararge and most of the water went under the wall.and i dont have carpet just tile and stained concrete.i broke the tank at noon and wasnt finished mopping up till 8 pm.
just in time for my wife to get home from work.
thought i was safe but she saw the water in the gararge ,she came in and moved the china cabinit to find and inch of water still behind the cabinit in the corner.
show your wife this post and tell her ,at least i wasnt this guy.
i work with concrete ,work on cars and generally leave things out for her to clean up after me so .bless her heart she is used to it.

Calvert, I have just read a few posts where they malfunctioned and the system just kept making water until everything is flooded. This is just a few cases, so I can't really preach that it's a no/no, but I personally just rather stay manual. The idea of having two is a nice, b/c it would be rare that both would hang up on you. I don't think I ever even looked at the one that came in the box with my system, is there any metal parts to it?

I just did the same thing last week. Had a 5 Gal pail on my second floor bathroom where I have my RO/DI unit set up..forgot ....must have spilled 5 gallons, started to come thru the ceiling on my main floor...mess...Now I just throw the bucket in the tub...have forgot a few times since then and it just drains into tub. I have the same float shown in that pic...going to eventually set up in basement and install the float. Ha. Im not the only one that has flooded trying to purify water!

I make my RO water on top of my dryer so I know how your wife gets when you over flow it. I've done it a few times, well more than a few. I have not done it in a while though now. Now after saying this I will do it today. Luckily my dryer is old and she does not care for now. I really do need a shut off. Also the guy that says he does not trust shut offs is probably saying he has heard bad thing about the ones that dont require drilling. The suction cups fail and the brakets are cheap and dont work well. Drill the hole. Good luck with the wife, hopefully you bought her a nice Christmas gift and she'll be over it.
