I was digging through the storage shed and found my 45 gallon tank.
Is 45 a good tank for saltwater or would I be better off just going freshwater
like it was to begin with ?
I've heard that a 45 is a little tall for saltwater
cause the lighting doesn't reach the bottom very well. Either way salt or fresh,
I need to build a new stand for it cause the old one was a factory stand
and it got wet and is junk now. thats ok need campfire stuff anyway,
Just thought I'd ask someone else's opinion.

45 is fine for SW, what do you want to do, fish only or reef. What are the dimensions of the tank. If its tall, then you just need a little stronger lights

I don't know yet. i was thinking just fish and live rock. But i've got a 55 already that way.
The girlfriend would like it fresh cause she likes all them goofy goldfish.
But I like saltwater. as far as the dimentions, I know its 36 x 12 , but i didn't measure the hieght
( duuuhhhh ) I'll have to run over to the storage shed again.
But first I gotta win the arguement of fresh or salt cause that makes a diffrence of how the stand is built.
I'll go measure the height and have that in a little while.

Hmmm Here I thought I'd get a little more advice on what would go better
in a taller tank. Such as maybe a lion fish or groupers or something.
If i don't know what to put in it I'll have to let mama win and go with goldfish.

its not so tall. you will need to work on getting some height out of your live rock. drilling and rods work good.
Its too small for lrg lions, and groupers, but Dwrf fuzzy lions would work.

what kind of rods would someone use for that ? a thin pvc pipe or something ?
I'm not using metal in my tank.....

You could go to Lowes or HomeDepot and get the cheap fiberglass driveway markers and cut them down and would work just great. Cheaper than acrylic rod and smaller than PVC. As far as lighting that is open and dependent some what on what your planning on keeping???? You could do MH's but height could be an issue with mounting and space above tank. You could opt for t5's less heat lower mounting, or check out LEDs for your setup. HTH

I like the idea of driveway markers. I bet that would work just fine. Easy to cut and I can make them any length i need.
A good masonary bit of the same size and away we go. All I need yet is a little imagination and hope the rock work
looks good cause thats how it's gonna stay. I'll have to think about this a bit yet, but I'll make it work and look good I bet.
thanks for the ideas
Jeff
