After I acclimated him and put him in the tank, he opened up almost immediately!! I also put in 3 emerald crabs (again), but they disappeared almost immediately

Sorry for the bad pics, but I didn't want to use a flash. He's much more beautiful than these pics show, but here goes anyway...

yeah, that's a bubble coral. In the pics it looks to be closer to the clam because of the angle of the pic though.
My clam has fully opened and is getting comfy in his new home. I do have some questions though. This being my very first clam, what are some things that I need to look for in him. For instance, what would he be doing that would red flag my moving him to a different spot. Any assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

I don't have a clam myself (wrong lighting for one) but I have heard from others that their clams will move around their tank until it finds a place it likes. Moving the clam around yourself will only prolong it finding its new home and sometimes it settles in a place that you don't like (back of tank). Someone on here posted how one of their clams kept knocking over stuff in their tank.
Good luck.

Well, my clam is in the same spot he was in at bed time last night, maybe just "scooched" in a little bit. I think he likes it :jumping:

It's a beauty! It needs to eventually be moved up into the rockwork, but take your time acclimating him up to that point. You do have halides? Croceas are the most light demanding clams, and it will do well right under one of them. Signs of stress to watch for...with new croceas, and the stress of being moved, handled, etc. you may see what is called "gaping". This is where the larger hole at the bottom, is much larger than normal. Give it time and if your parameters are kept in check, he will stop doing this in a week or so. Bad sign to watch for is called "pinched mantle"...that is where a portion of the mantle pinches or folds back. We won't talk about that now..let's send positive energy your way...good luck!

I do have him under metal halides, and that's where he seemed to "scooch", further into the light. I will definitely keep an eye on things, but tonight he's opening and closing when he should...
As far as acclimating him to location, how long should I leave him on the sand? He is by some rocks that he seems to like and I don't want to move him if I don't have to. I would rather not wait til he gets himself all stressed if I don't have to. I'm thinking that I will just wait and watch...like that's a problem

Thanks for the replies.

Ok, just a thought. I do have a couple of really nice spots in my rocks for my crocea. And, if I end up moving him...hmmmm...that pretty much opens up a perfectly good spot for a squamous clam!!!
Step by step instructions on how to acclimate my crocea to my tank and rocks appreciated!!! If his foot is already planted, does that mean I should just leave him and he's happy? I'm totally new to clams and I want to do right by this guy. So far, he's looking really pretty content (????) in the sand by the rocks!!

Thanks Beth!!
Same here with respect to your new addition!!
I took some new pics tonight when my clam was fully opened. The first 2 are without the flash, the 3rd pic is with the flash and more true to what he really looks like...yeah, those markings are neon!! He really didn't care much for the flash though, he really, uh...clammed up tight with that!!

Here goes.

Crocea's definitely like rocks better, they are rockboring clams, so if you have a nice spot? I would move him, squamosa, derasa, and gigas like sandbeds.
Lovely specimen!

I'm going to attempt to move my crocea today since I'll be in there anyway doing a water change. If he's already placed his foot, should I just leave him where he's at? I don't want to cause any harm to him. Suggestions are greatly appreciated!!
Thank you!!

Well, I did my water change and scraped the coraline algae off of the front of the tank...well, as much as I could (see my other thread in New Hobbiests). I didn't move my clam because I wasn't sure that I should...no response on this thread...it's Sunday, that's the way it goes. Also, he just looks really content where he's at, at least for now. All of my fish and critters seem to be happy campers in their new clean home...

OK, I know, I'm talking to myself...
I just checked my clam to see if I can EVEN move him, and he is firmly planted and apparently happy where he's at...'nough said, gonna leave him.
