What an awesome idea!!!!
I've been searching all over for it myself, but I'm in NH. I never thought to ask them to do a search. They simply told me they didn't carry it.
Thanks!

Oh MAN!
I tried... no they can't do it.
However, they told me to get the company's # and state it's produced in, and I can call the company to get a list of local distributers. Could you please post whatever info's on the bag when you get it and e-mail me directly at rhague@metrocast.net?
THANK YOU!!

I sure will. I would have never known about it unless if I didn't join this BB. Antthing to help. They said 7-10 days and I'll have it. I paid $21 fo 300 pounds. Sweet deal. Home Depot really took care of me. I went in and told the Pro Desk that I was looking for a specific type of sand, gave them the details, and he called me today informing me how much, where, and when I can get it. I will update this when I actually have it in my tank to try to help :)

Jester,
I also would like the info on the bag when you get it. My local HD said if I get them the info they should be able to get it for me (I think being friends w/ a Mgr didn't hurt either)
THANKS!!!

Susan,
Have you tried the HD in Concord. They were the only one around here that had it when I bought mine. The bad part is, when I called they said they did not carry it. When I went to the store they had a whole pallet. I will look for you if I had up to Concord soon!

AWESOME!! I'd really appreciate it- Can you get enough for a 100 gal 4in sand bed? When did you go up there?? I don't know where it is, but if you go, I'll pay you for gas as well and meet you somewhere to pick everything up.
THANKS!!

I called the Concord Home Depot and they said all they carry is Quikrete play ground sand. That's what all the other HDs around here say as well. Does anyone know whether this one is as safe? I would assume not. What's so special about Southdown that makes it OK for aquariums anyway?
Thanks!

It's me again,
HD called me a little bit ago and surely put a smile upon my face! They are ordering me Sowthdown Sand and will have it this Wednesday!
HINT... For anyone looking for this- the guy said NEVER ask the front desk if they have it! Ask to speak to someone in GARDENING only, and ask if it's there or if they can locate/order it for you. The types of sand they carry are different in the dif departments... go figure...
Steve, can you get up there Wed? I have no clue where they are! I want 4 bags- enough to get a 4 in bed on a 100 gal tank plus have a little extra. If you can't make it up can you let me know when you can? If not at all, I'll ask for directions and take a stab at it. Besides, that'd be a great way to meet you- say at ***** on Manchester? Hope to meet you soon!

Southdown sand is the ONLY type of playground sand that is safe to use in SW aquariums. It's much cheaper to get this if you want to start a Deep live sand bed. You get this in 50 lb bags really cheap!
You dump it in a clean bucket, rinse well, put over the bottom of your tank, and cover with live sand. The LS will propogate the playground sand. (Some people mix the two, but I'd put the LS over the top of the play sand.)
This is a seasonal type of playground sand, and comes out in most garden stores and almost all of your local Home depots/Home Quarters/Lowes/etc... in the spring.

the thing with southdown is that is silka free, which is a must for a aquarium. southdown is made by the same people that sell you dry sand for your tank.. people are getting it for about 2.50 a bag! unfortunatly I couldn't find any here in ohio, so I just paid 150 for 120pds of live sand. :(

Hmmm well Southdown is an excellant sand to use in your tank. There are lots of other cheap substiutes if you don't have it. Silca sand is fine to use in your tank. The buffering qualities of argonite are overplayed...if your PH is at such a level that the sand will start to buffer your tank, you have a lot bigger problems then what will be cured with some sand.

Now all that being said...I believe that Rochester plans on ordering more in in the spring...check with them there to see....I bought 800lbs when I was there last Novemeber and still have 400 left.

i just call the concord, NH. HD the leominster MA. and also the Springfield MA. Hd and they say that they do not order from Southdown anymore and that they also do not ship from store to store. They seem as if they do not want to help at all. Were else can you get southdown? I am getting ready to set up another 125 gallon tank and want to try this sand. If you get ahold of southdown and find a list of local stores that cary it also e-mail me it thank you @ rfeyrer@uhs.umass.edu

Thanks so much for the info everyone! I'll be sure to call them.
Yea HD snubbed me. The guy that called me must have been on something, because when I called the manager for that dept. today to confirm, the lady in there said the manager isn't even in this week so my sand wont be ordered anytime soon. That's wrong for people to to say stuff just to make themselfs look good! I'm didn't drive the 11/2 hours to get there THEN find this out! I'm going to see who else carries it and the he#@ with HD!
