I have never really been one to follow the norm, so tell ya what I did. - I bought a cortez ray for my reef. - Let me tell you. - It makes watching the tank SO much more interesting. I've never seen ANYONE with one of these in there tanks locally.
Enjoy

Nice Ray! I've got a similar one in my reef/semi-reef mostly coral not a lot of inverts. Just make sure e has enough room in the sand bed.

Yeah, that was something I looked into before I bought him.
I have a huge sand bed for him. - The owner of our local pet store knows me and my tank really well. - Even so much that he help set it up. - He said that I have more than enough sand for him, even when he is full grown.
So I was pretty pumped!
I'm still shocked I got him for only $50!
Even better they dont normally sell these to customers - just for there display so that was even cooler. - Hes been in captivity now for like 2 months. - Eats really well.... already ate out of my hand which was INSAINE!

kinda looks like it doesnt have enough room up front to bury itself w/o touching the rock or the glass, and at how fast they tend to grow, its not gonna be pretty. depth isnt the issue, its the disc width of the ray that will be a problem.

I measured the sand bed, He has plenty of room to burry himself. Only area there isn't alot of space is in the middle of my tank because I aquascaped the rocks to come out like a v.
We'll see how he does, if he starts to show signs of distress I'll give him to my friend who has a 500 gallon tank.
I plan on up grading to a 500 in the next 6 to 12 months. - Hopefully that will be enough time for him.

might be depending on how u aquascape the 500, remember, they can get up to a 16 inch disc width, so keep that in mind when u aquascape.
the second his disc width prevent him from hiding, put him in ur friends 500. just my 2 cents.
watch out for ur inverts too when he gets larger.

is that substrate CC? if it is, if u notice that its gettin bruises on the tips of its disc, move it to a tank w/ sugarsized. sometimes, rays hurt themselves w/ that substrate. and when there that small, chance increases.
