if the power goes out what keeks the water from syphoning back down to the sump through the return pump?

Usually there is a little hole drilled in the return line near the end of the return to break the siphon.

What you would do in this situation is to install a one way flow valve so that water can not get back through... It is effective if you use the right valve.. They are typically available at any of the major home improvment chain stores..

there also another chepper way... drill two small holes in return line that goes into tank from pump ,1/4" below water line. when power goes off it will back siphon to this point and then air will be sucked in thus stopping siphon.. it works... my friend and i tested it on his,, works all the time...

Sammy,Seems like thier should be some kind of reset breaker switch out there somewhere. This is not a problem in my tank. My overflow is made in a way that it keeps enough water in it to save the syphon.STEVE
