I plan on buying either a snowflake eel or a ribbon eel for my 30gal. I need a few pointers considering it will be the first eel I will own. I have read a couple of articles on them but I need more facts on their behavior, aggresivness etc. ...Thanks ;)

First I'm not sure but I believe that is a bit small for eels. Another thing is you don't have much to add with them due to your size of tanks (if it is even big enough) and their aggressive nature.

definatly pass on the ribbon eel. they are very cool but almost impossible to keep.
30 gal would work for a snowflake eel (which is my favorite)...i kept mine in a 30 gal. for 2 years, but after i moved him to a 75 a few months ago he seems much happier and seems to be growing faster too.
If you do put him in a 30 i would hope that you are prepared to get him a bigger home in 1-2 years.

I'd say go with the snowflake of the two, we have one, We've never had a problem with him being aggrisive with his other tank mates. If you are planning to buy one, I'd say get a baby that way he'll be small enough for your 30 gal, when he gets alittle bigger he will need to be put into a larger tank. Ours was about 10-12 inchs when he went into our 72 gal, in 4-6 weeks he will be put into our 200gal.(as soon as the cycle completes.)He is now between 14-16 inchs. Later Lisa :D

Thanks for all the information, but where can I get very young (baby) eels? I live in Miami & there are many aquarium shops down here but they do not carry any baby snowflake. Is there another alternative that I can choose from (i.e. catalogs, internet, etc..) thanks, ;)

just check in frequently with your lfs...that's what i did and it seems (around here anyway) that most of them that i see for sale are young (6-8")...

Most wholesale houses can get very small snowflakes, but a lot of stores just buy the larger ones (easier to sell). Ask your lfs and I bet you get a small one (normally they should be about 20 bucks).

pass on the ribbon it will likely get out of your tank and outgrow it quickly. the snowflake is very passive and wouldn't even bite you if you put your finger by its mouth. its also a community eel and can be found easily in small sizes. just ask your fav lfs to get you a small one. if they can't, find a new fav lfs.
