Hi my sailfin tang is laying on his side on the sand and breathing real fast. I was in the tank a few hours ago whiping alges off the glass and the pumps. My hands were clean is he stressed out because my clown fish is on the other side of the tank that is not were he hangs out hi is all the time on the right side??? Please help

Laying on the side is not normal posture for stress. You need to test the water prams now, you could of released ammonia into the tank or something else from the algae. Plan on a 20% water change. Post all your tanks params. I take it everything was normal B4 you cleaned?

Ok nitrite at 0ppm. nitrate at 0ppm one min on the ammonia. So can me moving the alge off the water pumps too let the filters get it will cause a ammonia spike??

Are you running canister filters? If so why would you want algae to go into them to clog them? Best to wipe off algae remove from tank wash down sink drain and repeat till algae is gone.

There is your problem .5 is to high, time for drastic water change 50%. Also if you can stop and get yourself a bottle of Amquil+ or Prime both will help reduce ammonia fast. You will probably need to do maintenance more often on the canister filters. I suggest doing them at different times, that way 1 is aways functioning.

OP has 2 HOB filters, not canisters....otherwise, I totally agree. However 0 .50 is very low for a fish to be that sick, don't get me wrong, any ammonia is bad ammonia. However that low is a warning sign, not enough to go killing a fish....are the other fish in the tank acting sick, or breathing hard?

I have to agree that .5 ammo is too much.
If a tank is properly balanced, that much ammo should not be present. It may get released but don't we cycle tanks so that ammo is pretty much instantly boggled up when/if it is present?
I would recommend a water change as well. The faster the better.

Okay folks...I never said it wasn't bad...any ammonia is bad and I did say I agree 100% to do the water change. However, like you stated 1 is lethal therefore .5 is not lethal...at .5 there should be time to fix things. I was asking if all the other fish in the tank were showing equal stress and breathing hard. If not, and all the other tank mates are okay...then something else is going on BESIDES the ammonia spike.

Get off the site and get the water change done.
AFTER the water change, you will have time to figure out what happened to prevent more trouble. You need to find out why
you have an ammonia spike. Are you missing any other fish? Maybe something is dead and up in the rocks. How many power heads are in the tank? Was your sand left undisturbed for a long time?...maybe you released toxins when it got stirred up...running some carbon may help if that's the case.

How did you clean the HOB filters, if you have two only clean one at a time, and by cleaning you should clean the sponge or what ever you have in there with tank water. Only do one filter at a time.

That sucks buddy.
After you do the WC, or the next time you are at the LFS, pick up a bottle of Prime or Amquil+. If you had some one hand already it may have saved the tang. Again, sorry you lost the fish.
