I'm thinking on starting a saltwater tank. How big should I go and what kind of fish and stuff should I start out with?

I started with a 55 and now the old saying, "If I only knew then what I know now" is applicable - go with at least a 75.

Well i started small to wasn't sure if i was even going to like the cost and up keep of a tank . Small tanks also don't take up much room ,to have a big tank you have to find a good place for it your house. So i started with a 55 but i would have proably started with a 90.To my surprise i love the hobby and have upgraded since then to a 300 and i'm more then happy now. It's really up to a person how much time and money they want to spend.

Go with the biggest tank your budget allows. The bigger the tank the more stable your water chemistry will be as things don't tend to get out of whack on larger tanks. Starting out with a "test" tank...something smaller just to see if you like the hobby is IMO a big waste of money that could go towards the tank that you really want.
Do some basic research of maintainance and costs and then decide if this is something you like enough to invest your time and your money into. I wish I had started out with something like a 125 gallon tank. It just gives you a lot of options. If you can afford to go bigger...by all means do it. But right now my dream tank would be the 300 gallon at the LFS *drool*
