I need some lighting ideas

I have one of the usual aquarium hoods with 15W 50/50 actinic bulb. I want to add more light to my 10 gallon reef, but i can't afford anything expenssive because i just recently purchased the above mentioned hood and actinic bulb.
Also i need to have the tank closed at all times, because of the cat hair. My cat finds this tank very interesting:)
I was wondering if anyone has some idea how to modify the existing full hood and add more lighting power to the live rock underneath.
Thanks in advance

There are a number of power compact (PC) retrofit kits out on the market that would fit in there and provide ample lighting.

I'm not sure I understand your question then. I thought you wanted more power? If so you are going to have a stronger light source than NO.

I wanted to check if there are any kind of different bulbs that can go in regular light strip, or if there are any kind of mods that can be done to add more power when it comes to light.
I found retrofits before, but i can't afford it at the time. if i had the money for it i would not be in need of an advice like this. :help:

Do a google search for "Helios T5". that should give you links to places like amads that sell them. These things are a 5/8" fluroescent that has the ballast built in to it. You could probably fit 2 in where your current lamp is if they have the right length. You want the High Output (HO) high quality version, not the one with the built in reflector. Don't waste your time on the Normal Output ones.

EDIT: btw, I have 20W 50/50 NO lighting (preety much same hood, just bigger) on a 20 Long (30" length tank) and I am keeping shrooms and kenya with good success. I am also just starting to get some coraline growth on the back of the tank after only 6 weeks.
Just my .02

There's a chilli cactus coral that would probably be fine under that light. They are bright red with white polyps. I've had one hiding in a cave for a couple years now. Kinda a drag to have such a cool critter hidden but I got way too much light for it.

The same company listed in a previous reply also has a retrofit kit called a NANO light set in the clearance section due to over stock of the item for $24.00 and it will handle 28 to 65 watt PC bulbs.........I wold retro one of those with the PC lights into my setup instead of going for a T5 bulb driven by a ballast that will not power it up sufficiently.........I have a 16 gal bowfront AGA, and managed to squeeze a total of 168.5 watts of PC lighting over it, without going over the original dimensions of the top of the tank.......its foot print is roughly that of a 10 gal tank in regards to width and length. I have 1 coralife 96watt quad, 2, 28 watt PC, 1 13 watt PC and 2, 3/4 watt lunar lights. Needless to say that tank is well lit. I have it all under a custom made acrylic hood. The $24.00 for those nano ballasts complete with bulb clips are well worth that price, so all you really need is a space to fit a 28 watt PC bulb, which requires approximately 14" x 3" including reflector.......So if yur usuing a standard typical aquarium hood, it would be a simple matter to gut it out of original electrical items, and mount the bulb socket and clips on original reflector and hood..........or you could easily use the same ballast and go with a higher wattage bulb and still fit inside that hood, but I would add a small muffin fan on one end for some cooling, but you would be way above average lghting on most small tanks withjout spending much money. IIRC that sight that has these lights goes by Helios as well as "hello" lights. If you want the website addy email me.
