What is this creature? It rolls into a ball and has a hard shell.

I would still say it's a pod, but the question would be good or bad. I remember seeing some pictures on here and if I'm not mistaken I think this is one you DON'T want. But, I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time.) If it were me, I wouln't add it to my tank until I knew exactly what it was.

Oh I am not going to put it in the tank. But, what worries me is that there might be smaller ones that were in the bag. I wanted to put 1 bag in the tank and the other in a culture tank. Now they are both in the culture tank and my mandarin is still looking for pods. I don't think he eats those that I see in the bed. The ones that look like shrimp and you can see their dark vein. I think he eats the ones that I see on the glass at night eating algae and they shoot through the water really fast. That is what I have in the culture tank now.

It is a male Sphaeromatid! I emailed several people. It is amazing all the sites out there for these pods.
Sphaeromatids are small bugs, generally less than a centimeter in length. They are common scavengers in many shallow marine environments, including coral reefs, and they are harmless to reef aquarium inhabitants. They can be recognized immediately by a couple of distinctive characters. First, each individual has the capability to roll into a ball-like terrestrial pill bug. None of the other isopods likely to be found aquaria will be able do that. Second, when examined with a hand lens or magnifying glass, the last pair of appendages of the males are expanded and extend to the rear, like small rudders or the fins on a 1959 Caddy. Females lack these extensions, but if some of the isopods are seen with them, that is usually a good indication that the rest of them are also Sphaeromatids. If it cannot roll into a ball it may be a Cirolanid.

i guess the next question is how many will you eventually have and what are the predators in the tank. will the mandarin eat them?

I never did put it in the tank. I still have all the copepods I ordered in my gallon fish bowl. I need to go to the market and buy a clam! The guy said that these like to eat meat and will reproduce more so. I will find out how many more I have in the bowl in a couple of weeks. Right now I think the mandarin has been eating the baby copepods and amphipods. He won't eat the adult ones. Reason why when I showered him with all the adults with a turkey baster he didn't even bother to go after them, just kept pecking at the glass. So the question is: What is the life span of an adult copepod/amphipod? As long as I see them in the gravel bed then I am ok. Hopefully they will live several years and keep making babies! But, I think he did wipe out those that I have in the bowl which are the Cyclopoids. I don't see them on the glass at night anymore.
On a side note. Did you get the tile of zoos yet?

That is the most disturbing thing I have seen in a very, very long time... good lord. That thing is alien... we live on the same planet as things like this!
If that thing gets any bigger it's going to crawl out of the ocean and start pulling a welfare check and free medical care.
