My RO/DI water cartriges went bad a few weeks ago. I posted a similar post a few weeks ago and followed advice but nothing has worked. The tank was over grown with green hair algae. So I took out my corals and only ran the lights for 1 hr a day for about 2 weeks. Of course I did a big water change when my new ro/di cartriges came in. I even tried sucking this crap off my rocks. I can't seem to kill this crap. Now I do have a clean up crew. My tank only has 2 fish in it. What else short of taking all the rock out and scrubbing them can I do?

Get snails...lots of salt...some 32 gallon trash cans...keep the stock water mixed, circulated and proper temp...put the snails in...change 25% of the water about every two days...with the water changes you are trying to keep ahead of the dead hair algea decomposing and providing supplemental food for the new stuff to take hold...while you are keeping it at bay with the water changes...the snails are tearing it up...Use only RO/DI water.
I recently did this with my 90...took about 2 weeks...now the snails are getting thin.
Algea gone...and it was done naturally...

Slick,
I'd continue to do water changes as often as you can until you're sure there's no new hair algea starting. Kind of like Kip said....made sure you've gotten rid of all the food for this stuff.
When I had hair algea, I had some luck using an old toothbrush and brushing the rock in the tank.....then quickly syphoning the floaters out. You've got to make room for the water changes anyway......
Not to be negative, but from what I've seen and read, there aren't many inverts that will actually go after hair algea once it's growing. Removing the food source and scrubbing seem to be the most effective way to get rid of the stuff.
Good luck.
Jim
