Some people don't realize how BIG the coal mining industry is. So I figured I would show a few pictures that I took last night at work. The first one is of a Caterpillar 797 haul truck. This truck hauls 400 tons of coal. If you look close you can see me inside the rim. The second picture is of a Caterpillar 5130 excavator, we call these shovels. The guy standing next to it is 6 foot tall. They load the haul truck with coal. The final picture is of me stricking a pose in the bucket. Just thought I would show you guys some pics so you could see the big stuff I mechanic on.

right ?
Yes it is a Diesel engine. It has two 3512 cat engines that are coupled together. FYI the 35 means 35 inches of displacement per cylinder and the 12 means it has 12 cylinders. So the cat 797 has a total of 840 inches of displacement. It also has 4,000hp and 3,500 ft lbs of torque. Oh and a top speed of about 45mph with 400 tons of coal in the bed
.
Now as far as MPG, that is kinda hard to figure out cause we dont have anything on the truck telling us how many miles it has on it. We do everything by Hours. But Im pretty sure someone told me out there that they use around 35 to 45 gallons of fuel an HOUR. And the coal mine runs 365 days a year, and 24 hours a day. It never shuts down unless the roads are closed and we cant get an emergency vehicle in or out of the mine site.
Oh and in 2007 we broke the world record for loading trains in one day. We loaded 24 trains in 24 hours. I guess when your the largest open pit mine in the world you can do things like that for fun.

From what I remember from my wrench-bending days, they are driven by a hydraulic motor, which is powered by diesel engines.

thats crazy. i want to drive the first pic vehical down the street
.

I do have to admit that people would crap themselves if they seen that heading down the road. Considering the truck is a little over 50 feet wide
. I will try and get out in the pit tonight a take a picture of the drag line. These are by far the largest pieces of equipment. They are just HUGE HUGE HUGE!!! The drag line strips all the top soil off of the coal. It takes 4 people to run them. 1 to operate the piece and the other 3 make sure everything is lubing all the pins and cables etc.

Nope these haul trucks Have an engine, torque converter, transmission, drive line, and a differential. Just like most of the cars and trucks on the road now. Ive been hearing that cat is coming out with a new haul truck that is electric drive. So you would have an engine and a huge generator.
