i want to set up a small tank for a clownfish, i'm going to school in less than two weeks, but we're only allowed to have a 10 gallon tank. is that big enough for a clownfish? if so, which is the cutest/easiest to keep? your help/opinions are appreciated!!

I'd say no to perc's, Mine liked to swim.
But an invert only tank would be cool, we used to have one.

With that size tank, you will have to keep the bioload down. A fire shrimp or two, a firefish goby, perhaps a small cleaner goby or two.
Clowns (even percs) will want more room to swim when they grow up. As juveniles, they will be fine for a few months, but they will need larger quarters quickly.

My advice is to go out and purchase the book 'Clownfishes' by Joyce D. Wilkerson. She advises how to set up a ten gallon tank for a pair of false percs. IMO they would be fine, mine hover in one spot of the tank most of the day and have lived in a 10 gallon QT for months in the past. The tricky part would be maintaining proper water levels. Daily freshwater top offs and weekly 1 gallon water changes are a must (and a skimmer would do wonders). Many will dissagree with this advice I am sure. If you decide to go this route maybe try a hang on bio-wheel filter for a larger size tank to maximize filtration and water flow. Good luck at school!

With my prizm skimmer i do a water change every two weeks. i dose purple up and iodine weekly. i feed every 2 days but cyclopeeZ gets fed every day as well as the clownfish like there live brine shrimp treat once and a while i use R/O water. i dont have much of a clean up crew right now just a cleaner shrimp, 5 mexican turbos, 3 nass snails, and unknown crab and a starfish "the star dosent really clean up much tho" i change carbon every 2 weeks and really thats all there is to it
besides topping off the water of course

Clownfish, especially Ocellaris clowns are ideal for nano tanks as they have one of the smallest areas of swimming needs even in the wild, they do not go far from home.
Research everything very well, nano tanks are not the easiest but can be done if you are very deligent with water changes.
A nano, with a pair of ocellaris clowns, and various inverts would be a neat tank to have in a dorm room IMO. Stay away from corals for a while, they just make it much more difficult. and Collge life is pretty crazy.

Ditto gotta have a lot of time if you want to keep corals in a nano

Yup. A pair of clowns, a cleaner shrimp and some hermits would make a pretty cool tank. High maintanace but cool.
Thanks for sharing your upkeep Brad.

thanks, guys. and wow, brad, your tank is awesome!
i'm not too worried about my schedule yet, i'll be done w/ classes by noon every day but thursday, when i'll be done at 3. my mom is considering giving me her 10 gallon tank w/ her lr and percula. it also has some hermits, a cleaner shrimp, a gobie (i don't think i'll inherit him), and i think there's a brittle star in there. she wants to set up a hospital tank, but doesn't have any room. (all this time w/ 3 tanks and she doesn't have a hospital tank. the 10 gal. was supposed to be the hospital.)

i think its nice of your mom to give you a tank with cured rock already set up and you should be greatfull cause its expensive instead of critisizing her for not having a hospital tank.
