About 1 week ago, I found that my Blue Tang had a pretty serious Ich covering. Several days latter, my Copper Band Butterfly started developing it on his tail. Several days latter, my Blue Tang also started getting Black Ich.
I thought I was done, and was going to loose my friends. I am very partial to my Blue Tang, we have named her Dory and she has lots of personality.
Refusing to give up, I dove into deep studyresearch on Ich, and what really works, and what is safe for invertebrates.
Most folks on this board know that scientifically, there are only 2 proven ways to destroy Ich; Copper and Hyposalinity. However, one of my local fish stores is run my a Marine Biologist (graduated from Oregon State), who has worked closely with many Phd's. This guy is a "MarineReef Tank Wizard". You can talk with him about any saltwater topic, and he will go in-depth and beyond any amount of detail you want.
He has one of the most beautiful 800 Gallon reef systems I have ever seen in his shop. A couple of months ago, the tank got infected with Marine Velvet. Obviously, that is a big problem when you have a tank that size, and have to quarantine fishes that are the size of a small dog.
He used a product called Marine-Max, which introduces bacteria and pro-biotics that help the fish combat disease. Marine Velvet is normally very deadly, and can wipe a tank in days. Using Marine-Max, the fish stayed alive and eventually recovered. The Marine Velvet was completely eradicated.
He recommended I use the product, and have been combining it with Garlic Extreme. Using 2 drops on both flake and frozen shrimp feedings 2x day. I have an 80G FOWLR system.
It is know day 5 since I started this combination, and the Ich is gone!
The Marine Biologist recommended removing the fish into a copper or Hypo quarantine tank, only as a last resort. The stress of moving them into the other system can often be fatal.
I hope that this information helps some folks on this board.
