Ich - What Worked For Me

About 1 week ago, I found that my Blue Tang had a pretty serious Ich covering. Several days latter, my Copper Band Butterfly started developing it on his tail. Several days latter, my Blue Tang also started getting Black Ich.
I thought I was done, and was going to loose my friends. I am very partial to my Blue Tang, we have named her Dory and she has lots of personality.
Refusing to give up, I dove into deep studyresearch on Ich, and what really works, and what is safe for invertebrates.
Most folks on this board know that scientifically, there are only 2 proven ways to destroy Ich; Copper and Hyposalinity. However, one of my local fish stores is run my a Marine Biologist (graduated from Oregon State), who has worked closely with many Phd's. This guy is a "MarineReef Tank Wizard". You can talk with him about any saltwater topic, and he will go in-depth and beyond any amount of detail you want.
He has one of the most beautiful 800 Gallon reef systems I have ever seen in his shop. A couple of months ago, the tank got infected with Marine Velvet. Obviously, that is a big problem when you have a tank that size, and have to quarantine fishes that are the size of a small dog.
He used a product called Marine-Max, which introduces bacteria and pro-biotics that help the fish combat disease. Marine Velvet is normally very deadly, and can wipe a tank in days. Using Marine-Max, the fish stayed alive and eventually recovered. The Marine Velvet was completely eradicated.
He recommended I use the product, and have been combining it with Garlic Extreme. Using 2 drops on both flake and frozen shrimp feedings 2x day. I have an 80G FOWLR system.
It is know day 5 since I started this combination, and the Ich is gone!
The Marine Biologist recommended removing the fish into a copper or Hypo quarantine tank, only as a last resort. The stress of moving them into the other system can often be fatal.
I hope that this information helps some folks on this board.

.
Ich releases from the fish by itself in a weeks time and assumming the fish had ich at least a day or two before you used it no visable ich at this time hardly means anything.

I was thinking the same thing.
Does Marine-Max also slice, dice and julienne?

Actually..... It means a lot. The fish are definetely getting better. I will repost another week from now to confirm, this is more than them dropping off naturally. They are being forced off.
You can do what you want with this information, and no I don't sell it. Have fun taking your fish out of the tank and copperin or hypoin em up. I am sure they will appreciate it.

Triton. Sorry for all the sarcasm. It's just that there are so many products out there that claim to cure ich. None of them seem to have a high success rate if any at all.

thank you.
report back in another week since it takes almost that long for them to reproduce and attempt to reattach. You cant possibly know if its the product or just the natural course of ich in 5 days. even with copper and hypo the ich falls off and the fish look better and they do NOTHING to harm ich while its still on the fish.

Whether it is gone now or not, the ich will be back whenever the fish get stressed again, and you will just wind up spending the money on the product again.
A quarantine tank, and hyposalinity if the fish get ich are the only way to truly prevent and treat ich (with the exception of copper).

It is also likely I will end up spending more money on fish that pass away from the stress of being put from main tank into quarantine.
I recommend using the product periodically anyway, whenever a stressfull event occurs (adding more fish to the tank).

Locking thread as it has turned into a "send me an email so I can buy this..." thread.
Folks, this "medicine" is a temporary fix at best. Use proper QT to keep ich out of your display. Once ich is in your display nothing short of allowing it to go fallow for weeks will rid the tank of it. (and even then there are cases of it re-appearing...)

Just to clear something up, fish rarely die from being moved from one tank to another. They would have to be severly stressed out before the move. And if that is the case, they may be too far gone anyway.
If you have a properly set-up quarantine tank, you will save a lot more fish than by using a reef-safe medication.
Also, if you would just quarantine all new additions before putting them in the display tank, you will not have these issues in the first place.
