ich

my firefish seems to have ich, and i am thinking treating it with the special ich remover (no copper!) it sposed to be reef safe and safe with like inverts and all. but i dont want to use a lot cuz the ich doesnt seem too bad. so im leaving the carbon in my filter and dosing it regularly. is this ok to do. i think quarantining is out of the question, because if anyone had a firefish, only they would know how fast the little buggers are! i dont think i could ever come close to catching it with a net, so im taking the risk of curing the tank. any suggestions as to wat to do, and does anyone have any experience with that reef safe ich killer, its called RxP reef edition or sumthin like that. so please help, the life of a little firefish lies in the balance!

What medication are you using?
The only viable treatment for ich is hyposalinity and copper.

A reef safe ich tratment? Sounds a little like snake oil to me, plus it might put beth out of a job here:eek:

the reason it is reef safe is because it contians no copper, and it is called RxP reef edition or somthin like that.

Hi there, yes concensus opinion on RxP is that it doesnt work on its own, however I am currently using a new combination of RxP and Poly Ox on the advisory of the European Marine Biologists in charge of Kent Products who says here in the UK it works 100% of the time. I started it yesterday and I must say the signs are good but I cannot recommend it quite yet until I have seen it work completely, i will keep you posted.
Yes Garlic is best for holding the little critters at bay.

Hi again terry,
No on its own it is useless, what it does do is contain freshwater plant extract which soothes the fish after being treated with RxP and together cause mucus on the fish to drop off, and hence the ich.the explanation is a lot more elaborate than that but I cannot remember it, Im a biblical scholar not a marine biologist!
Yes I am prepared to take that 50% chance because it is that or nothing, I CANNOT afford a refractometer and i still believe transporting them into a QT is too stressful.
However, time will tell and so far it is working, I am looking to get a UV steriliser at the end of the month which should hopefully keep it and loads of other parasites at bay.
ALl the best and hope there are no hard feelings,
Tim.

Just like all things in this hobby there seems to be no set in stone rules in disease and treatment either. Tim if you beleive that RxP and that other stuff is going to cure the ich, and it is working than by all means best of luck. I hope it works out for you and keep us posted.
