ok. im still trying hypo on my cowfish. im getting a refractometer within the next week or so(im jewish so whenever hannukah is). im not very religious so im not exactly sure when that is. my hydrometer reads that the salinity in his tank is below 1.004. but he still has white specks on him. is my hydrometer really that off? does this mean when i think my salinity is at 1.025 that it is actually over 1.030? or is it less accurate when there is less salt? how low can the salinity go before the fish dies? how high can it go before the fish dies? hyposalinity = low salinity, hypersalinity = high salinity? sorry for all the questions. -thanks

Don't experiment with your inaccurate hydrometer! Fish can not tolerate specific gravity below the 1.009, thus don't try to drop the SG any more. If you're waiting for your parents to buy the refract, ask them if you can get it earlier [emphasizing that your fish's life depends on it]. Perhaps they will help your fish out if you show them how sick he is.
Swing arm hydrometers can be very inaccurate, even for measuring SG for the water in your display tank. They really shouldn't be used. Mine is off by about 6 points.
But please stop playing around with the SG in your hospital tank. Does the LFS have a refract or salinity monitor? You could call the local stores and see if you can have your water tested if they use one of these measuring tools. Then take them a sample. Even a quality glass hydrometer would give a better measurement than a swing arm.

ive called 5 stores none of them even carry refractometers. ive had this fish for a while now, probably at least a month and he is still alive. how long can a fish live with ick?

well i doubt it's around 1.004, but im just saying that is what my hydrometer says. i have a cowfish though not a clownfish. does the same thing go for him? he also has huge clumps of what looks like salt on his fins, what is this?
