ick, the more I know the less I know

I am trying to do the right thing. I have a 55 G with a yellow tang and peppermint shrimp, live rock. My tang has ick and I have been treating him with organi-cure. I don't have a Q tank. I have drained off 5 G water. I am thinking of doing hypo but not sure how and whether it will kill my live rock. I have only had it set up 6 wks. My ph was off at first but now my test kit show everything is normal. I am guessing the stress from the ph got the ick started. Help somebody. I don't want to do the wrong thing and be fighting this forever. I hear that the parasites will sit in the sand and then pop up later on a host fish.

Well I believe you will get enough flack from the others for introducing a tang to such a young tank and no quarantine but I will spare you .
No your live rock will not survive the Hypo and I doubt you have the knowledge and tool to do it right anyway so the best solution is to set up a quarantine or atleast try some garlic to get the ick under control.

That was just rude.

Thanks for your advice. I am going to get a Q tank and get started. Now I just hope I can do it right. Will let you know how it goes and will try to be patient. Can I continue to add live rock to my dormant tank? I have been adding some every week. I am on a aquarium budget. At least I could be working on getting it looking good, right?

Hyposalinity does not require a rocket science degree, but it is tedious. If you can not get a refractometer, which is what is needed for pinpoint accuracy in measuring salinity, be sure to get a high quality glass hydrometer. No swing arms. This is very important, because hypo won't work unless you can accurately attain the 1.009 specific gravity.
