Ideal mechanical filtration for JBJ Nano Cube DX...

I got my 24 gal. Nano Cube up and running and I was curious as to what you veterans use for mechanical filtration? I removed all of the stock massive sponges along with the ceramic cylinders and bioballs. All I have in my rear compartment is my 50 watt heater and stock pump. My current plans for mechanical filtration are to clean the surface skimmer and to turkey baster out wherever detritus really collects, most likely in the back compartment in one of the corners and/or the middle chamber. I wanted to avoid using a sponge or filter pad if at all possible, however, do you guys think that is possible?

I would look into making a surface skimmer. Also consider plumbing a sump/fuge. Very helpful.
