Ideal reef system

I'm starting from scratch.
in wall
small room for equipment about 8x8
space for 4 ft long
what equipment should I purchase for a reef system looking at 75gal
any good books on the subject

It just depends on when you say "need". Start by getting informed. I have made many mistakes by jumping for this, that, or the other. I got a book called the Conscientious Marine Aquarist, by Robert Fenner. It is a pretty good book and will take you from A-Z. As far as equipment, it is going to boil down to what you plan to keep and what the budget will allow.
