the guy at ***** said put it on a ugf, but wont that just be a death trap of bad chemicles?

Don't listen to that guy at the fish store anymore.
Just put the sand on the tank bottom. You'll need about 4" to get the proper layers of denitrification. You'll want worms, stars, and snails to work your sand bed to keep it healthy.

Don't use the UGF... how deep are you planning??
Most people just add the sand and stack the rock up on it or add the rock and put the sand around the rock...
