I'm back from hawaii

Aloha!
As most of you know, I went to Hawai'i for one week then O'ahu for the next one. It was the most fun I've ever had in my whole life! And besides lots of other fun excursions, I got to snorkel four times! I saw:
Raccoon Butterflies, Teardrop Butterflies, Threadfin Butterflies, Oval Butterflies, Ornate butterflies, long-nose butterflies, fourspot butterflies, and lemon butterflies, Moorish Idols, Christmas Wrasse, surge wrasse, birdfish wrasse, saddle wrasse, and Hawaiian cleaning wrasse with thier own cleaning station, a male blue boxfish, yellow tangs galore, achellies tangs, sailfin tangs, orange-band tangs, naso(orange-spine) tangs, convict tangs, unicornfish, eye-striped tangs, and yellow-eyed tangs, sergant major damsels, chocolate-chip damsels, blue-gill triggers, black durgeon triggers, pink-tail triggers, picasso triggers, recangular triggers, and white-line (boomerang) triggers, porky puffers, hawaiian spotted tobies, yellow-stripe goatfish, trumpetfish, needlefish, peacock groupers, whitemouth morays, and a snoflake moray!!!!! woa, I saw alot! and the underwater photos will be done developing tomorrow so I can start working on putting them on the net for y'all to look at. Plus, you will be able to find out alot more about my trip there, and I the other fun things I did besides snorkeling.
By the way, the hawaiian alphabet only has 12 letters: A,E,I,O,U,A,W,K,N,M,P,and H, this makes all the names sound the same! very annoying when navigating thru honolulu with just a map full of unpronouncable words! hehehe... and I only learned two new words: Mahalo means thank-you, and lanai means deck/porch. Aloha has three meanings: Greetings, Farewell, or Love.
Very confusing! OK, I'll shut up about hawaii now. (You can imagine how my poor friends are suffering thru my obsession with talking about it....)

Welcome back. Sounds like you had a great time. I think the time to travel is now, while your young, When you get old like me you get stuck in the mud. Didn't mean to make that sound bad,but it happens. STEVE

Good to have you back again and this site too!! I have a question for you. I have made reservations for a week long trip to hawaii in december. I was thinking of scuba diving once I am there. I heard somewhere that you have to be certified to go for scuba diving. Is it true ? If yes, what do I need to do to get certified. If its just swimming, I am a good swimmer.
Thanx in advance

There are two ways to scuba in Hawaii,or anywhere else.#1,take the certification class and listen to an instructor tell you how you have to buy all this expensive equiptment you'll use a couple times in your life,if your like me.OR #2 find a friend to take you while your there.I chose the later when I was in Grand Cayman. If you are a VERY GOOD swimmer, and your"friend"knows what he's doing, you'll be ok.REMEMBER SAFTY FIRST. But you do have to go to a class to become certified.I'd look into this befor you go so you dont spend vacation time in a classroom. STEVE

I certainly don't want to spend time in a class on my vacation. And I don't have any friends in Hawaii. And I don't want to buy equipment that perhaps I will never use again (I'd rather spend that money to upgrade my tank in some way). Isn't this equipment available for one or two day rental like ski's? As far as taking a class in advance is concerned, I have to find a place for that where I live. Thanks for the info. It will certainly help save me time.

I'm sure there is a place to rent but "buyer beware".There are almost allways additional costs.Like you must go on our boat,BIG deposits, not to mention high prices to rent the stuff. I'm not trying to cast a dark cloud here, but dont be surprised. Most people I have talked to(including FISHGIRL) have gone snorkling, and enjoyed it just as well.I have done both, and in my experience, snorkling is much more compfortable and user friendly.....STEVE

Hi,
basically you do need to be certified to go scuba diving. THe only exception is when you do a "resort dive". The good news is getting certified is not very difficult, just go to your local dive shop and ask about it, you may even like to do it while you're in Hawaii.
I did my Open Water Diver certificate with PADI. It only takes 2 weekends and you can have your certificate. You can do many other certificates as well such as Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Dive Master, Underwater Photography etc, but the basic open water diver it all you need. It is a good idea to do a course because that means you can dive anywhere in the world whenever you want, I go for many dives locally with a mate on the weekend. Look into it, it is definitely a certificate worth getting.
Regards,
Tom

Yeah snorkeling rocks
but in my obsession I'd love to do scuba, and won't mind buying the equipment since I know I'll use it alot and am a very good swimmer. (I've know I'm gonna be a miarine biologist of some sort since a was seven years old.)

I would love to scuba dive on a coral reef. I've never been scuba diving in my life. Snorkeling would be cool, but with scuba diving you can get right in the middle of all those fish and stay down there for a fairly long time. You can feed some of the fish too. I'm 16 and have yet to see all those coral reef fish in the sea. But I will go saltwater fishing with my dad on the 7th. We will fish for tarpon, shark, and some other fish. It would be fun to catch a shark, but I would let it go since they are supposed to taste bad and too many sharks are being killed by people afraid of them. We're going with a guide in Galveston, so I don't think we'll see any corals or tropical fish...not warm enough unfortunately.
Fishgirl, you must have had a BLAST in Hawaii. I wish we would go on tropical vacations, but my parents are stuck in the mud like Mr. Salty.
