In the market for a dog...

Well, started my new job, got my new place, finally married, finally moved, its time for a Canine companion. Ive been researching and thinking about different breeds, their temperments, size, amount of shedding, exercise they will need etc. At first I wanted an English bulldog, they are incredible dogs, but Ive found out that they are prone to a LOT of health problems, so I reluctantly decided I was not ready for one of those. Then I thought newfoundland, st bernard, teacup poodle, golden retriever but I was sure I wanted a puppy. I was sure I wanted a puppy and not an adult or resue, but then recently on petfinder.com I came upon Jake.... here is what his ad says...
Jake is an energetic chocolate lab mix. He has just 3 legs, but that doesn't seem to slow him down! He still likes to retrieve and run. He does fine with most other dogs and likes people. Dogs are kept on monthly heartworm preventatives and on flea/tick preventative. All dogs are spayed or neutered before adoption, their vaccinations are current, and they are microchipped
My heart melted. My wife started to tear up, We wanted a puppy, someone we could raise and love their whole life, and there is nothing wrong with that! Ive always gotten puppies and never gotten an adult or rescue dog before. But we both felt all warm inside when we saw Jakes little face. We called up the place today and asked about him, and the lady said "he is one of the most friendly and energetic dogs we have, but no one has ever called or even looked at adopting him because he only has 3 legs..."
We are driving to go see him tomorrow night.

he looks so HAPPY!!!!!!! He is so freaking cute. I love that expression on his face. oh my gosh, I bet you will be coming home with that dog. I don't think I could leave him, I would have to take him.

the only problem I forgot to mention is that my wife and I are going out of town for 2 weeks, and we leave this sunday, so if there is good chemistry between us and him, we are going to have to leave him there at the shelter until we get back...
Im thinking about Renaming him to Ed. That way, I can call him Special Ed. Cause hes so special!

but at least if you did adopt him, you know no one would be able to take him. He'd be there waiting for you to come home. I love the name Ed. LOL

How old is he? From the coloring on his face I'd bet he's more than just a few years old. Might have a tough time renaming an older dog...

They estimate his age at 8-9
and actually, Ive heard that when a dog is going to a new environment with a new owner, they pick up their new name quickly as long as you are consistant.

I was thinking you should call him Tripod but that is so cliche!
Good looking dog.

Awwww, that's a special boy right there. Great choice for all involved! Was he born that way?

I mentioned it on another thread recently, but we got a 9 year old shetland sheepdog from a couple that was retiring and wanted to travel....we got the dog against my "better" judgement and Andi Roo was such a wonderful dog...he lived to be almost 17 years old before we had to put him down. I was dead set against getting a dog that was that old, fearing that it would only last a couple years....boy was I wrong!!!
If the dog is healthy, seems full of spunk, and takes to your and your wife....GO FOR IT!!!
