Income Tax headache

Well I just spent the day doing my taxes and it appears that once again the IRS is getting more of my money then it feels like I am
I owe several thousand dollars this year - all because when my husband was laid off in November his company offered a serverance package of 2 weeks pay for every year of employment plus additional payouts dependent on age+ service. This payout was paid on Dec 19th - just in enough time to hit this tax year!
And on top of that since we didnt buy this house Until Dec our deductions dont equal what we need to Pay
You work hard all year to make enough money to live comfortably and see what happens

I feel your pain and anger! Just an FYI...... You can make arrangements with the IRS to make payments. You actually end up paying more in the long run (what else is new  ) but it hurts less up front. :D

Are you sure you took advantage of every deductable possible??
There are so many that people don't even know about. Like 15% to a charity or church, but you will need reciepts. But 5%, you don't.
Clothes, office supplies, etc, etc.

Ive tele-filed the past 3 years. Ive moved since last tax season rolled around so I have to wait for that stupid tele-file packet in the mail so I can get the number off of it. Ive had my W2's for almost a month now. I might just do them myself. Grrrrr...

If you go to IRS.GOV you can choose a program to do your taxes for free. My husband and I chose Turbo tax, and it lists every deduction the IRS offers, how to get it etc. It also has an explination for the questions. We did our taxes in like an hour, and found out about a ton of deductions that we didnt even know we could get! We also e-filed for free and got our return in like 5 days. Just FYI so you don't have to spend all your money paying for soemone else to do your taxes! We found so many deducations we could have gotten for the year before's taxes, that we are going to ammend them (we had someone else do our taxes last year, and we found that we ended up getting ripped off!) Good Luck!

i turbotaxed as well......for my gf. one of my stupid 1099s has yet to arrive so i've nothing. turbotax got her $200 more than hrblock for some reason, nothing special, just the easy free file thing on both sites. also i've found a free state tax site through my state gov. site, so you might check that out for your state.

Sadly the thousands I owe is from the turbo tax free package at irs.gov
I have made an appointment with a local tax specialist since the circumstances are very different with a layoff, relocation, purchasing a home as well as the fact that I work from home.
Hopefully they can help me - and if it come out worse then I file the started one through the web - if not what can I lose?
