Hello everyone, and thanks for the advice in advance. I have used SWF before, but i'm new to the message boards. Here is my dilemma. I have a 30g reef aquarium that has been up and running now for a little over 2 years. My problem is, my girlfriend always took care of it, (i only watched :( ). Since we have parted ways. I think i have done fairly well. I switched the crushed coral to arag. sand about a month ago. Everything did well in the transfer. Water parameters are great. I even have baby green crabs : ) Lots of live rock, which looks great imo.
Now the problems......
I have 3 peppermint shrimp that have been in the tank for a year now, i have recently noticed they have become aggressive. They recently picked my carpet anemone to death and ate it and a week ago i got a shipment from SWF ....10 cerith snails.... they did well for a day, i came home from work, and the shrimp are pulling the snails out of their shell ( still alive), and eating them.
The second problem, which may or may not be related.....in with the order of the snails, i also got a sally lightfoot, and a yellow watchman goby. Everything thing was doing well... so yesterday i come home and sally is munching on the goby :(
OMG, the goby was small, but was so cute. This is my first sally in tank....are they typically like this? Or is it possible i'm underfeeding everything? I have read so much about DO NOT OVERFEED...is it possible i have went to the other extreme?
Here is a list of what i feed and what's in my tank....help please,
i enjoy the tank so far since i have been handling it, and even thinking of stepping up to a larger aquarium...but i don't want it to be just peppershrimp and a sally lightfoot.
in my aquarium...
live rock (guessing 20-30lbs.)
condy anemone
curly q anemones (shrimp are picking at these now)
carpet anemone DECEASED
3 green crabs (and 4 known babies) not sure how many they have
large clownfish (one white stripe, orange in color)
yellow watchman goby DECEASED
green mandarin dragonet
choc chip star
lawnmower blenny
3 small 3 striped damsels (sally is chasing them)
2 very small yellow tangs (no tang police plz, read the whole message, i'm getting a bigger tank) if you had seen what they were when i bought them, you would thank me...some pet stores are sad.
approximately 10 hermits that are at least over 2 yrs old. they were the first thing added to the tank when it was set up.
Now their diet....
2 caps of marine snow a day
approx. 2 1/2 x 2 1/2" of frozen brine (twice a day)
teaspoon of spirulina a day
seaweed sheets...tangs get probably 4" sheet a day
each adult green crab gets 2" sheet...yeah i handfeed them on a skewer...lol i'm into the tank!!!! :)
sometimes sally will take.... maybe ever 2 days or so...
so please, give me some opinions...do the shrimp and sally lightfoot just not belong in the tank? or am i doing something wrong? thanks.

Most likely the shrimp and sallylight foot was introduced to meat at one point in there life and now that is what they look for. The best bet to get them to stop is feed them daily or every other day with shrimp or squid. Just any meaty item you would feed the fish. Once they taste meat they will just keep killing.

Maybe you could apologize to your girlfriend and she will come back and take care of the fish for you? :D Just kidding. It sure doesn't seem like you are overfeeding them by any means. I agree with snipe, give them some sort of meat along with flake or pellet foods.

Lost the girlfriend but got to keep the tank. You can always get another girlfriend but good established tanks are hard to find.:D Sound like you have it under control.

My shrimp love the flake food, and the food i make. (shrimp from grocery store, scallops, and fresh garlic) I buy 4 or 5 shrimp, 4 or 5 scallops, and 2 cloves of fresh garlic, chop it in a small food processor put it in a ziplock, and make very flat, and freeze.) it cost about a dollar to make and last for ever. My next batch i am going toadd sea veggies
