Instant ocean salt vs reef crystals

I have regular instant ocean salt that I've been using in my FO tank. I will be adding a bit of LR and then coral. Will I need to start using Reef crystals instead of the instant ocean salt? Is it necessary? THanks.

Reef Crystals has a higher concentration of CA, Alk. & Mg and trace elements..better for a reef. Instant Ocean is ok for FO, I don't recommend it for reeftanks.

I agree with promise, reefcrystals will make it easier to maintain, desirable levels than using regular IO. Personally its one of my favorrite salts. bang for your buck, price versus concentrations, you cant go wrong. IMO.

Ok I use instant ocean and I have no problems with it, but I am starting a reef so if I was to switch over to reef crystals how would I go about doing that. The reason why I like instant ocean because it always gives me the exact salinity I need for my tank.

HUH? any salt will give you the right salinity for your tank if you put the right amount of salt mix in.....
as for switching over just use up the salt you have and buy reefcrystals next time. you can do a larger than usual water change if you want to help speed the transition to the new salts higher concentrations, just make sure your SG and temp are exact in the new water and you could do a 50% water change to switch over. or you can do your regular size changes as per usual.

Don't want to highjack the thread but this question fits right in. I have a 90gal with 180lb lr and no corals. Because I want to get good coraline growth I have been using seachem reef salt thinking it would give me the extra calcium I would need to promote coraline growth. I have noticed that my alk is pretty high on every reading. I use RO/DI water on every change and test w/ salifert kit.
Could I be doing harm to my tank by having these higher levels from the reef salt and not having any corals to use them up?

no. not at all. the coraline and such will consume some, no worries there. they will only go as high as the maxuimum concentration of the salt, wich is perfectly safe. (unless your dosing something wich you shouldnt do unless your testing to see if you need it).
