Interesting Chat with a guy at LFS

It's been quite a while since I posted anything here but now that the summer is winding down it's time to come back for the winter :D
Anywho, I was at my LFS yesterday just taking a look at an order he got in the day before and some guy starts having a conversation with me...you've all been there, i'm sure.
We were just ya know comparing tank size, lighting, fish, etc...the usual stuff when he tells me he has 3x175 10k halides and 4x110watt vho's.(2 actinic and 2 50/50)
He then told me he runs his vho's for 9 hours a day.....a couple hours into the vho's period, the halides turn on....only for 4 hours though...then he runs the vho's for the rest of the day.
I told him I had a dual 250 system with 20000k XM bulbs over my tank and he said, "get some vho over the tank and use the halides as your secondary lighting. the vho's are the best!"
Apparently what he does with his tank is run the vho's to get the corals to open....then the halides make them open and stretch out nice and big.....then he said when the halides go off the corals open even more because they are reaching further to try and find the light..?? To me that sounds very odd....but apparently his tank is breath-taking.
After he left the store I had a chat with the owner and he told me that his tank was very very nice...............but vho over the halides? hrm. Anyone else ever hear anything like this?
P.S. Sorry this post is so long-winded! :)

I like my vhos, but I can't say differently because I don't have halides and never have.I am going to buy halides this week, and I will be using actinic vhos as well.I'd like to hear other comments too.

Sounds almost like his corals are "panning" for light. The excessive polyp extension is because the corals are trying to get more light and thus creating more surface area ..... would be hard to say with out seeing the tank.
Other possibilities:
* Tank does not have a lot of light demanding species so the MH act like direct over head sun and the VHO are close enough to provide the needed light.
* He aggressively feeds his corals so they are being fed with both zooanthella and food?
* His wife told him he can only buy MH bulbs once every 2 years .....

I have read in a typical reef that the maximum lighting a reef gets is for only 4-6 hours a day. He seems to be simulating that photoperiod. Y? i coudlnt' tell you. He'd probably get more growth with at least 6 hours a day but i guess that is his perogative. Heck my acro i have doesn't "open up" till dark.... Last night his polyps came out huge all over his body.

Jon, Im running a 175 watt 20K XM over my 13 gallon tank and I love it. I still run a 2 X 28 watt pc with one actinic and one 50/50 bulb though. I am happy with the color, and also happy with the growth/color of the coral. The zoa's that I have in there have gone crazy with growth, and the same with a couple shrooms that I have in there. One shroom that was in my other tank under 440 watts of VHO tripled in size due to expanding better only after a couple days. Its also kicking babies out left and right.
I have a couple digi frags and some acro frags in there too.....the growth isnt as great as it was under the 6,500K bulb but it is still noticable.....the color on the other hand has improved 100%.

Couldn't it be, say like flowers in a garden... they will follow the sun. Have you ever seen time laps photography of it.

my dilemma is that i love the ab bulbs that i have....they give off great color and produce excelent growth....i am interested in testing other out though.....i was thinking of buying one 10k xm and one 20k xm and seeing what happens....the 10K xm's are supposed to actuall burn around 13-14k just like the ab bulbs......
i hate lighting....i think thats all there is to it!
good luck

I love the XM's. They burn at 20k for several hours, then they shift to what looks more like a 14k. I've only been running them for a month so I can't comment on growth just yet...but all the corals open fully for them and look great!
Hope this helps.
