tonite i took apart 2 rio powerheads. a 400 and a 600. what was interesting to me was that the 400 was better built. it is the lesser model of the 2 and costs less. the 600 move 53 more liters per hour, at 600 while the 400 moves 547 lph.
the 400 was better built based on the facts that it had a stronger magnet holding the impellar to the drive shaft, and was more solid overall in the impellar unit. if you wanted to take a look at one piece you had to take the whole impellar unit out. it was also easier to put back together. the 600 came out in small bits of the impellar. making it better to find the actual spot of the problem.
in closing i would like to say that if you have to choose between these two terrible powerheads, take the 400, but if you can avoid them totally.
im also making a table for my aquarium. it is really sweet. red oak top with cherry legs. when it is done ill post some pics!
