I've got an Emerald Crab, Coral Banded Shrimp and snails in a 10g with a pair of Ocellaris Clowns. The crab and Shrimp are very fun! A little secretive, but they always come out at feeding time to gets the Clowns' leftovers

Many people recomend one snail per gallon. If you keep hermit crabs, expect to replace a few of those every now and then. Hermit crabs are useful scavengers, I'd keep a couple even though they pose a risk to the snails. A shrimp (or pair if they're the type that won't get territorial) and a emerald or proclain crab should round off your tank. (The Emerald will eat algae, I highly recomend him if you're not using RO/DI water. The Proclain is a filter feeder, and will need supplimental feeding if you don't have enough "pods" in your tank.)
Just my idea, there's a wide range of inverts out there, like fan worms, corals, urchins, cucumbers, scallops, clams, nudibranchs and starfish. I'm just recomending the less troublesome ones for starters.

No problem - one other thing I thought of is when you're getting snails keep in mind what type of substrate you have. Some snails speciifcally burrow in sand, which is good for your sandbed, but not good for the snail if you have crushed coral. Other snails (I think turbo but not certain) aren't good with a sand bed because if they get flipped on their back they can't turn themselves back rightside up.

I agree with you, I really like the inverts alot and the most interesting hting is to research each one, figure out what it's "job" will be in your tank (eating algae, stirring sand, etc) and then when you have a certain combination in mind, ask the members here for their opinions.
Have fun

Blue legs are aggressive....they kill snails and other hermits for their shells or just for the heck of it. IMO stay away from what you mentioned above...not good for a 10 gallon. :D

Nudibranchs a) have very specific diets, not all of which are known. b) have the tendancy to get swept into powerheads and into overflows.
Make sure you know the diet requirements of the specific species you're looking at and completly nudi-proof all circulation equiptment before purchasing one. Don't believe any statement that a nudi is an omnivore, without a ton of research, or personal testimony from someone who has kept the same species alive for a long time.
Cowries I don't know anything about.
Conches get pretty big, if you don't have a place to put them when thier older, you may want to wait until you have a larger aquarium. Other than that, they're basically large bottom-dwelling snails.

I would stay away from the blue leg hermit crabs. I made the mistake of putting some in my 29g tank when I first set it up and they killed my snails and then turned on each other. Now I have scarlet hermit crabs and they seem a lot less aggresive, I still have all my snails.

I also have a 10 gal, I have one hawaiian zebra hermit crab and one scarlet hermit crab. I have one camelback shrimp going to a new home on Friday and being replaced by a cleaner shrimp. The camelbacks are not reef safe in my case eating my xenia like it was caviar... And one snail, I want more snails vs the crabs. They do a better job in my tank of cleaning, but a bit of both is nice.
I was going to get some Cowries and Nudibrachs. The Cowries are not reef safe I have been told by 5 different LFS and there are many types cowries too.
Nudibrachs really need a large tank to meet their needs. I have never tried one but know two people whom had them in their tanks and they did not live.
Good luck to you.....:happyfish

About the Nudibranch...I have used a lettuce nudibranch to get rid of some unwanted hairalgea and then passed it on to a friend who has done the same. If you have a few friends that have saltwater aquariums I would recommend getting one, they are not very expensive, letting him eat away at the algea that you don't want and then passing him on to someone else that needs him. It has worked for me and a few of my friends. I also agree with you on the liking snails in my reef tank more than Hermitcrabs
