YES,I believe that is overkill.Plus the heat would be immense. Why not look at the 175watt with vho's for supplimental lighting????

NO a 400w ballast requires a 400w bulb. The bulb/ballast have to match.
Did you already buy the ballast? If you hang the light at LEAST 12-16 inches above the water, you might be ok.

that is what i am planning on doing, you see, i have a glass top also, and i am planning on hanging it along with my pcs, i kno it will look stupid but i want to keep these clams and i am bidding on this setup from ----, and it is brand new and it is only 100 bucks with the allast, reflector, cords and bolb, a complete set. and that is a great deal so.

That might be a little much even for clams with that kind of intensity it might cause them to bleach out. with that kind of wattage the tank usually needs to be 24 to 30 inches deep. you can try it and if you notice any problems you can try moving the light farther away. What else are you putting in there, live rock will also bleach out if under to much light.

I agree that your money could be better spent on a lighting setup more suited to your setup.Look around a little more. There are several good deals on 175's right now on E-BAY.Plus a few other sites that offer 175's for less than $100...Remember that the higher you hang that light over your tank,The more of the light will be spilling out over the floor around the tank...The point is to light the tank,,,Not the floor.
