YES
But hey thats just my opinion. DSB's really aren't ment for nano's and beleive me after you take out for the DSB and live rock you've really got a nano there. All that lost room, I just couldn't stand a 6 inch sandbed, but thats me.

agreed . . . while it is not going to cause any harm, its really just wasted space.

What should i do then? I am about to add a refugium...should i just drain my display....scoop out sand and add to my refugium?
I am really worried about causing an ammonia and nitrite spike.

How long has it been set-up??
I like hte look of a DSB in my 20 .... but I agree it does not do a whole lot. Now - my DSB has been up a year now and it is teeming with life. And I have traded scoops here and there with other reefers and it is an extremely diverse DSB ...
I think you could scoop most of it out when you are building your refugium and then be ready to do a water change or two!!
Good luck and how big a tank are we talking about here??

it is a 28 gallon tank. The DSB is probably about 4 months old. Tons of grey spots.

I think so because you dont have but a little bit of surface area to work with anyway and would not help any significant amount just take up tank space...

You can use a hose to suck out some of the sand, that way you dont have to drain the tank all the way to scoop it out.
