Is a sealife protein skimmer good?

I bought a sealife protein skimmer along with a wet dry filter and i was wondering if its any good............i have done a lot of research for months about reef tanks and i was wondering what would be good lighting for a 55 gallon tank(48x13x20)i plan on having some corals needing about medium light........and by the way
