Is a seperator necessary

My 55 gallon has a seperator on the top rim of the tank, it throws the most terrible shadow!
Is it absolutley necessary, or can I cut it out? it was originally for the two freshwater lights, but this tank will never see them again!

I have seen people remove them and rivet a clear acrylic brace in. I would not remove it without bracing it back though. It may hold water but will significantly weaken the glass.

Yes ... it keeps the tank from bowing. If it ever just snaps on its own...somethng is wrong with the tank.
You should have duel lights on a 55g. A single light will cause the shadow. So now I have to ask...what type of light are you using?

Personally I would not even think of removing it...it is called a BRACE...It keeps the tank from bowing and falling apart....

Well, I didn't know if it was a brace or not, it's just a flimbsy piece of plastic. I figured it was a way for the manufacturer to save money because it allows them to use two smaller lights instead of one big one.
I'm using a single MH 400 Watt, 12-13 inches off the surface of the water and 2 T5 actinics. I get good light distribution, just wanne get rid of the shadow. I guess I'll have to find another way. LOL.

Mine broke and man did it bow. Lucky me it broke in the middle of the brace so I was able to get a piece of acrylic and weld-on and glus it back together. Stronger now.. Dont remove!!!
