Is a skimmer necessary???

I would say this will answer the question about a skimmer necessity. this is exactly 48 hours worth of skim form my coralife ss220 on my 180 gallon reef. I think the pics speak for themselves. the collection cup on a 220 probably holds about 1/3 of a gallon ....just a guess.

Yuck! I just dumped out about a weeks worth of gunk from my skimmer tonight and it wasn't pretty and I don't even have anything except LR and a clam in my tank right now.

we agree that is necesary, iwould like to know if thats how skimmate shouldlook like,cause that's how mine looks.
i was thinking it was a little on the wet side but mine is only 3wks old so it might be kicking in. Is there a difference in efficiency(chemical removing)between wet skimmate and paste skimmate or is the same. I thought that the best skimmate was pasty(more concentrated)but i rather get wet skimmate than non.
could 1cup of wet skimamate every other day= 1 cup of pasty skimmate once a week?
