If you have a QT tank, that would be O.K. to put him in there for a while to observe but I would nt put him in your main tank.

Definitely QT it and watch him. Im pretty sure its illegal to take stuff from the ocean so be careful. Those are some big fines if you get caught.

Depends on where you are. It may be illegal as stated. Ive collected many fish in hawaii and some are quite nasty. You risk introducing bacteria and parasites into your main and it will kill your other fish. Be sure to always qt all fish and observe them.

Also keep in mind that once you put it into your tank you are obligated, IMO, to keep it or destroy it should you not be able to keep it.
Once you put it in your tank, especially with fish and rock from other areas of the world, it is exposed to diseases and parasites not native to your area. Releasing it introduces these back into the wild, not to mention it takes a fish that is used to getting food without having to search for it.
Research the fish, know what it is before ever putting it in a tank. Could be something you DO NOT want.

Hi, i live in nj and last year after a heater problem wipped out my tank i went to the beach. Brought home snains clams and a few local hermit crabs and ghost shrimps. Along with them i bagged two minnows i guess they were. About 1 1/2 " they looked like dull fish but in the tank they developed pretty fins and grew rapidly. I found out they were great fish but needed a bigger tank.
I think it depends on where you live.
I have to warn you that some local fish can be bad in tanks.
In example
i was able to find ababy grouper about 2" and brought him home. I really loved him but he was a handfull. Moved my rocks, ate my snails and hermits, spat at me (but i got a kick out of that) I had to give him away. But as stated above never let a fish back into the wild. EVER. And that goes with fresh water fish aswell. Even putting goldfish in a local pond is bad.
