Is it common for your ph to be around 8.0 - 8.4 before buffering it?

I use Aqua lab tester strips and they showed I was close to 8.0-8.4 range before I added buffer. I used buffer this morning and now it is in the 8.0 - 8.4 range according to the tester strips. Is this common?

Yes it is. When I first started my reef tank 2 years ago, I would add the salt and the ph would already be 8.2
