Is it just me or....

nah, compared to Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell is the next Marlon Brando.
I saw "Dark Knight", which imo is the best action movie and comic book movie that's ever been made. before that, the last movies I'd seen in theaters were "No Country for Old Men" and "30 Days of Night". "No Country" was great and "30 Days" was *decent*. off the top of my head, some more all-time great movies that have come out in the past couple years were "Pan's Labyrinth", "Apocalypto", "Big Fish", "Closer". "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Million Dollar Baby" were two more great ones. so no, I think it's just you. there are still great movies being made.

Adding to with what Pontius said, there seems to be a growing rift in movies. Before movies were typically usually okay/decent to good, movies that you enjoyed seeing, but didn't really do much.. Now, there's either complete flops, or films that get talked about on and on for weeks, like Cloverfield or Dark Knight. Iron Man, and Transformers, were also recent hugely successful movies.

hollywood has officially run out of ideas.
want a good movie? try spaceballs, men in tights, or even better: blazing saddles.
try axing hollywood why they wont make movies like that anymore.

The movie biz is suffering the same fate as the music biz, caused by flooding the industry with talentless hacks & flavors of the day, in hopes of making a quick $.

those 3 movies are spoofs. and they ARE still making spoof movies. granted, not as good as Mel Brooks.

Don't depend on hollywood to make great movies. Try foreign movies as well. Notice how hollywood has done re-makes of numerous asian movies lately? Especially horror movies. Here's 2 amazing movies that you all need to watch if you haven't already. "OLDBOY" and "Taegukgi"..both south korean films.

It's just you . I think that people are expecting too much out of movies anymore . If its not ground breaking FX's and the perfect story line people tend to call it a bad movie . I think too many people set the bar too high and expect epic films every time . The truth is that is just impossible to achieve . I try to judge a movie based on what it is .
You can't expect Indiana Jones and the crystal skull to be a land mark film of the year 2008 . But what you can expect is some really cheesy action film . Its been 20 years since the last film in the series , and Harrison Ford is now an old man . We have seen him in a lot more dramatic movies so we would expect his roles to be better . But Indiana Jones is not a dramatic roll its cheesy action with some slap stick humor thrown in .
Just as anybody expecting the Star Wars movies to some how be more than what they are . Again its cheesy Sci-fi and thats all your going to get . Its directed to be corny . All the actors in the films have done far better jobs of acting in other movies . But in star wars you get what it is supposed to be .
I just think people expect things from movies knowing full well thats not what they are going to be getting . Thus leaving them disappointed .

couldnt agree more, but I hate when people rag on sequels, almost every time there is a sequel its going to be worse than the original movie, this is mainly because the original movie had to be a big hit for it to be up for a sequel, one exception i can think of is SHREK 2

That movie is sadly accurate of the world I see coming. Maybe a bit extreme, but basically more real than I would like.
For the most part yes, Hollywood is out of fresh ideas. There are a few great movies, like the ones people already mentioned. But it is all about making money and let's face it, the public accepts crap because the media hypes up crap and most people are just sheep begging to be told what's "cool". It's not just Hollywood, it's the television industry.

You know what is really lame are those movie spinoffs such as the "scary movie" ones, "spartans",etc. Ridiculously stupid and not even funny. Harold and Kumar (first one) is the Best!

yeah, movies are pretty lame, and just filling up marque space. There are a handful of funny movies (any will ferrel movie) But imo they are going for quanity and hoping one hits the ground running. But I do think they are in a predicament, they can make good movies, but they aren't making $$$ on them b/c of who the movie going audience is. Little high school kids who have 20 bucks to blow on popcorn and movie ticket. And they like stuff like X-men 4 and other movies in the lousy action genre. Then to top it off DVD sales are starting to reflect in the movies they make and apparently people are buying lousy ones (hellboy 2 I mean the first one flopped but I guess they sold enough DVD's to justify a second) Then good movies like Snatch get lost, because the people who would see if are fed up with crappy movies or 2nd rate clones that they just spend $40 to see 1 movie.

I didn't go to see Hellboy when it was released to theatres. I wasn't impressed with the trailers I saw and hadn't followed the comics so I didn't know what was to expect. Nor was I aware of the genious that is Guillermo Del Toro. I hated most of the comic book and video game to movie films so I didn't give it a fair chance at first. Once I saw it on TV I was very impressed and wished I had seen it on the big screen. The sequel was just as visually stunning but the story wasn't as good IMO. Anything Guillermo Del Toro touches is gold in my eyes. I only wish Pan's Labrynth was in English, but I will trade reading subtitles for excellent visuals and story line. Same goes for Peter Jackson. King Kong was phenomenal. The LOTR trilogy was a monster. He really tried to do Tolkien justice and didn't sum it up in 2 hours just to make it more ideal for Hollywood or the general public.
I like some of Will Ferrel's stuff, especially Old School and his more serious roles. But I had to turn off Taladega Nights after about 20 minutes. His humor is a bit... childish and immature for my taste, and like Jim Carrey, a lot of his roles are basically the same character over and over. He has saturated the industry.
It's a shame what George Lucas did to the Star Wars franchise, and to top it off, he went and edited the old trilogy to include his new vision of pre-schooler friendly characters and "feel good" moments. Parts of episode I felt like I was watching Barney or a Disney movie. I was also slightly disappointed with the new Indiana Jones film, but not nearly as much as I was with Star Wars episode I and II. It's all a reflection of what Hollywood sees as "good" marketing.
What really sucks is being a horror movie fan with no good horror movies. Too many good stories going to B-movie directors, with terrible budgets, releasing terrible products. Few and far between. I wish Rob Zombie would quit music and dedicate his time strictly to films. House of 1,000 Corpses was quite disturbing, just as a horror film should be. A summary of all the influences, and he out-did the influences. The Descent was very creepy. The Halloween remake was actually a remake that I enjoyed and did a better job of telling the story than the original, was creepier than the original, and had way more content, didn't leave any details out.
The remake trend. Recycling movies that were good the first time around and ruining them. Like Willy Wonka for example. Depp (and I like Johnny Depp) was horrible. The Oompa-Loompa's were horrible. Their songs sucked. The over abundance of special effects sucked.
CGI. Man, what happened to the good old fashioned special effects that consisted of talented designers using real materials to design creatures and space ships and sets and talented photo and videographers making you believe that those little models and puppets were real? It seems like 1 out of 100 films that use CGI do it well. Otherwise you get cartoony looking characters or out-of-place looking machinery or awkwardly moving creatures that aren't believable at all. All in the name of saving some money and lowering the overall budget so the profits are that much greater. Sacrificing quality in order to save a buck. I mean George Lucas and Jim Henson created some seriously overwhelmingly amazing creatures and sets like in Labrynth and now what do you get? The Judas of the Star Wars legacy. Jar Jar Binks. Barney in an amphibious CGI rabbit suit. Way to go George! Loser.

Will Ferrel isn't that funny, but I like Old School and Anchorman was okay. I hate the stupid scary movie spoofs and all the dumb american pie stuff...the last good movie I saw was Saw...not Saw 5 or Saw 3 or Saw 4...SAW. Jim Carry is great, in some of his movies. I <3 Liar, Liar.
