Is it ok to put sand in my QT?

Is it ok to put a thin layer of sand in the bottom of my QT? Just enough to remove the reflecton? When I used it for Ich I didn't put anything in it, and my damsel was killing himself.

You can paint the bottom of the tank black. The outside of the bottom obviously. Or tape one of those aquarium backgrounds to the bottom.
