Is my RO ok

I have bough a second hand Kent Marine RO unit and at the moment it is not connected because I need to get a new saddle valve. The end of the pipes are sealed to stop water leaking out.
How long will it keep like this before the membrane is damaged. I realise I took a chance buying used.
Once it is connected how can I tell if it is ok or not?

Not really sure how long it will stay without the membrane being damaged, or even if it will be damaged by being dry. Do you know how long it has been since it was last used, for that matter? As for knowing if it is working or not, once you get it hooked up, take a sample and either have someone test it or get a TDS tester and test it yourself. A TDS(total dissolved solids) tester will read in ppm(parts per million). If a high-quality RO unit such as this is working properly, it should lower your ppm down to under 10, where regular tap water usually ranges around 400 and up, depending on your locale.
