I experienced that with a purple tang recently after a major water change. I probably stressed it out. Lots of disturbance. It was very hard to look at but it went away after a couple of days. Then it came back, I think in the other eye, but again went away in a couple of days. Don't know what it was but very happily it hasn't come back. Hopefullly you will have the same happy ending.

might want to look up POP EYE just to make sure that is not what it is. If so do you have a Q/T ready cause you will have to remove from display tank and treat the fish.

it probably is some sort of infection. maybe he scratched it on a rock? try feeding it algae sheets or mysis soaked in selcon or something to boost his immune system. if it gets to the point where he needs to be moved to a QT treat with saltwater maracyn II. make sure the QT tank is CYCLED! or u may have major water quality issues. hope he gets better.
