Ok, I've been gone a long time. I'm getting ready to buy some MH lights, but before I do, I need to make sure I can keep a reef. Do you have to have a refugium in order to keep a reef? I don't think I'm gonna be able to get a refugium, becuase of my stand.. all I can fit under there is a small (10 gallon) sump.

Yellow it is definitely not a neccesity but is very helpful...You could always buy a hang-on refugium...

Ya it isn't. I had a 55 with no fuge just a sump and things worked great. The biggest thing I would say is the skimmer. Before I got my good skimmer I had troubles with fish dying and just algea and what not. After the skimmer I think I only lost 2 fish. One I think one went to my anemone and the other was a flame angel I had had for like 2.5 years. The fuge is just like an extra filter to help clean up the water and you can always stick other hitch hikers and stuff you dont want in your display in there.

also..fuges are good for growing pods..for fish such as dragonets..from my understanding thats about all they eat...and u can keep sum extra LR down in there with a couple other natural filtering items...ill be getting a fuge/sump in the future..definitely not needed..just nice to have!

You could even partition off a bit of your 10 gallon for a fuge. They don't require all that much space, and you're probably gonna have enough room if you're using some kind of external filter (canister?) and not a huge skimmer. Just a thought.

a sump is something that can be usd for filtration..u can keep all of your filters, skimmers, heaters, etc down there so they dont crowd up your tank..as long as the sump is hidden it keeps the tank looking more natural..a fuge is different..u put things like extar LR down there..sum chaeto or sumthing..a light source...and maybe sum ls??? (not completely sure on that one tho) and it is like a refugee camp for pods..a place where they can reproduce and make big colonies of home grown fish food!
:happyfish hope this helps!
