Is Rubber Hose Safe to Use?

Is Rubber hose safe to use for a return line? I was thinking of using a green rubber hose, like the one for gardening. Would the rubber hose damage or harm anything in my tank. Is it SAFE to use?

I have always been told no do to the way it is processed, also I have always been told that it really isn't safe to drink out of such a hose, but we always did when we were kids.

If you have to use rubber hose you can try a marine supply store and get the white hose with blue stripes that is designed for potable drinking usage. These are typically used to supply fresh drinking water to boats and would be better than ordinary green garden hose.

I read on some hoses today in a garden shop that some of them contain Microban - a product that is antibacterial, anti microbal and anti mold. I would not use such a hose.
