I'm no expert on the mantis shrimps but from the posts I have read on Saltwaterfish.com, several people are keeping them in speciaes tanks. 20 gallons seems like plenty of romm to me if there are no fish in there (but I haven't done it myself). Try searching "mantis shrimp" and I'll bet you get lots of threads from experienced mantis-keepers.
Good luck.

Is tank glass or acrylic?
20 gallons should be plenty of room for many Mantis species, but if it's a glass tank you'll need to choose carefully.

The bottom is not the issue. The issue is some Mantis have the capacity to "pop" so hard they can crack glass.

Actually, it is the bottom that needs to be worried about.
When Mantis break glass, which by the way is completely blown out of proportion (not saying it can't happen but it's not likely), it's the bottom that breaks.
If not provided a deep enough sand bed, they'll burrow to the bottom of the tank. When there, they whack the glass, thinking it's rock and they're just trying to break thru it, to keep burrowing.
Provide an adequate sand bed and to reinforce the bottom, cut a piece of plexi to size and lay it down, before adding sand/rock/water.

I've heard they can burrow and pop the bottom of the tank trying to get through, but I was always more concerned about them chasing food into a corner and hitting the glass that way.

Either way, it leads to a mess.

Agreed. But also the species needs to be considered. I've only heard of Odontodactylus Scylarrus(peacock mantis) and Gonodactylus Chiragra that can break glass. Still, they need to be a large adult for this to happen.
a 20g is a good size tank for alot of mantis species except for Lysiosquilla Maculata and Odontodactylus Scylarrus. Although the O.S. can do well in a 20g I would only put one in a 30g.
Are you looking for a spearer or smasher? Heres a great website for alot of information on commonly found mantids for aquariums. http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthrop...raca/royslist/

IMO, when selecting an aquarium for a Mantis, don't get a tall aquarium. I believe that when it comes to tank sizes for Mantis that the footprint of the tank is more important than the actual gallonage. How often do you see a Mantis swimming at the top of the tank?
They are fascinating creatures. Enjoy!!!!!

I wish I had a tank just for a mantis. They are great. Especially the peacock or 'colored' variety. Ive only seen one mantis in person and he was bright (like almost flourescent) green. The coolest little guy ever!
I like these kind...
Where do you even get a 'nice(in color)' mantis from? They never have any at either of the 5 LFS in my area (S.Florida)

I had a custom built tank made. Its about 20 gallons but has the foot print of a 30. I have about 3 inches of sand but I think he would be happier with 4 or 5 inches. As far as Live Rock goes, I just use rubble. I think I may have 3 pounds of Rubble total. Here are a couple videos of mine.

I got my peacock from one of my LFS in S.Florida. I just asked them to get a mantis in and they got it for me. Usually places don't get mantids in unless you ask for them.
Seconded on what shogun said. maybe a few good size pieces would be ok, but they use rubble to block their entrances and for building material.
For food you can feed krill/squid/silversides/clam. You should provide something with a hardshell every once and a while so it can use its raptorial appendages. If they don't use the rap. appendages then they may lose them in the next molt. You can look at my thread for my setup if you want. https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/270598/150g-divided-w-mantis-shrimp
