is there such a thing as too much light?

As you probably already know, I'm upping the lighting on my 75g reef in the next couple of weeks. I found a pretty good deal on 250w MH ballasts. Would two (2) 250w ballasts (probably use 250w, 10k bulbs) be too much for a 75g tank? Is there such a thing as too much light?

I have read that there is such a thing as too much light. You can reach a saturation point which can be just as bad as not enough light.
2 250's over a 75 I think is a good choice and probably no where near the saturation point

I was always told its somewhere around 1 watt per gal of water, unless you have a really deep tank.
you have 250W /75gal thats somewhere around 3.3 watts per gal. the safe range to run is 2-5 watts per gal.
I would say your lighting is sufficient except for some clams. they require higher levels

The typical set up range is...for a mostly fish only tank with maybe a few low light corals - 3-5 watts per gallon and for a reef tank 5-7 watts per gallon. I have seen people trying to go with much more but then you can run the risk of boiling the water or deep frying your tank so to speak.
