Is this a bleached coral?

It seems very bleached, I usually just see reds and yellows, nothing that white. Flowerpot corals are very hard to house in the hobby.

I've never seen a healthy white coral before. So, I though I'd just ask if its healthy or not. If it is, I'd like to find out more about these corals.

Hey Mr. Grumpy, chill out. Coral Keeper has every right to ask as many questions as he's/she'd like. I dont know what you guys have going on, but theres no need.
Coral;keeper. Most likely it is bleahed. Has it turned any whiter since you got it? Who had it before you? For how long? LFS? GENERALLY speaking, white is a sign of bleached out photosynthetic animals. It is the color of pure calcium carbonate as in the skeletons. As well tissue in some(most?) animals is white without the presence of zoanthalae(sp?). You see on stoney corals a white leading edge. This is not usually bleaching. It is new skeletal growth. As a general rule, stay away from bone white specimens. There may be some that are healthy animals, but I cant think of ANY that are photosynthetic that are white.
BTW, I hope my 12 Y.O. is half as enthused about this hobby when he's your age. Keep up the good work.
Also, there are many young hobbyists on this board, AT LEAST ONE OF THEM IS A MOD, and Damn fine reefer if I dont say so myself. He gets mucho respect when selling his frags throughout the net. I just wish I could get my hands on some of them.

Good luck,
Charlie

Its not mine. Its nwdyr coral. I was just wondering if this is a bleached coral and if there really is such a thing as a healthy white coral. That's all.

I will "chill out" when people like Mr. Coral don't come on my thread and tell people my corals are not healthy , based on a photo first and based on his exp 2nd. I asked him to PLEASE pm people b4 he makes them look like fools. especially when his experience in the hobby is limited to 1-2 yrs. He scared away a buyer based on ... well I really dont even know what he based it on , but like I said what he did was wrong and someone needed to tell him that. I tried to PM him but he just keeps wishing to challenge me on a open forum. Again his 1-2yrs Vs my 25+yrs. I can and often do learn from all kinds of people. My age or experience don't mean I am right , but there is clearly a "right" and "wrong" way to do it. And he just keeps choosing the WRONG way
I have a 12yr old son who I am trying to teach the hobby , I would not allow him to post neg comments on any threads. I want him to be more respectful then that.

fair warning for Both of you guys you need to chill out and take it off the public forums. This is unacceptable and wont be tolerated on here.
the only time a question shouldnt be asked on here is if it doesnt relate to the hobby and then it should be asked in the aquarium if its accpetable. other than that there is no reason not to ask a question about something.
I also have to say that age has nothing to do with anything!!! as stated above viper is alot younger person that I would ever peg him for you never know how you are actually talking to on the other side of the computer.
Yes there are several species of corals that are white most of them are non photo corals and need spot feed. I had a white leather that everyone said was bleached long time ago but even under halides it never colored up and grew and was a very healthy coral.

Just a thought or two.
I have even seen several dozen light intensive corals that are WHITE. You can never really tell with the spectacular single-celled photosynthetic algae that is Zooxanthellae. Generally they are going to come from further down on walls, but some will still maintain their colors. Clams and Corals can both share the same strands of Zooxanthellae as well. And even Clams can have THICK, bleach white stripes all over them and it doesn't mean anything (unless they are actually bleaching).
Another perfect example is Anemones. Curly-Qs and Condis would be the best examples. I know I have seen white anemones, and the two mentioned above are EXTREMELY light intensive and use Zooxanthellae for that purpose.

Based on the posts I read from two different threads it really seems like coralkeeper was more mature. If I didn't know better I would say the one crying was a 15yo. Age doesn't have anything to do with knowledge. I work in IT so it's especially true in my field. I am only 23 and work with people who think they know more than me because they have been in IT for a long time. I know more than them simply because I stay up to date on technology by reading and researching.
