From the angle it looks somewhat like a Limpet Snail of sorts to me. Does it move? Did you poke it? Squishy or hard?
But who knows, could be an ailen!!! =O

Limpets are good, but if it's a limpet it should be moving around. Hmm, maybe let someone else chime in on this one? Might be a sponge of some sort too. So far if it hasn't bothered anything, I'd say leave it alone. Even if something does hatch out of it, your fish might make a meal out of it. Still, someone else should identify.
